Dear Editor: - Please allow us the use of your columns to record our appreciation to all those citizens, elected officials, civic administrators, church leaders and journalists who responded in their in- dividually appropriate ways to help their community express its concern about the ever-looming’ prospect of a- nuclear holocaust. _. The West Van Referendum, in spite of all . the difficulties attending its organization and the usual demands put upon those who voted, accomplished its main purpose: First, to give the citizens an opportunity to form a consensus; Second, to give their elected representatives in Council - the opportunity to present to our Federal government a mandate well-founded in public opinion. While the referendum was in every way a community” action, we feel bound to congratulate in particular our Mayor and Council for voting unanimously on Alderman Finlay’s motion to present the view of Council and citizens ‘to our national government in Ottawa. As for this committee itself, we must point out that we see it, not merely as a small formal group, but rather as a growing nucleus with real’ membership already at least ‘as ‘large in number as those citizens who openly and forthrightly put their names to the referendum. As the initial facilitators of the referendum, this within, the: ‘modestly limited abilities of a few people. We invite their help. Clearly, the referendum is not the end of the matter. But it is a positive and hopeful indication that, amidst all the pervasive apathy and hopeful in- dication that we have been persuaded to believe characterises public at- titudes in the nuclear age, there is indeed an influential number of ordinary. people who do choose, life and will act upon that choice. rather than acquiesce in the sen- seless ‘ annihilation of humankind and our planet. For us to give up on this matter simply because we cannot be sure-of succeeding would be no different from medical science giving up on _ seeking preventions and cures for the most stubborn ofdiseases. We recommend “Gn this respect a reading of a Albert. Camus’s THE PLAGUE, in which that Nobel. Laureate drew the analogy between the resistance of a few doctors and other citizens to a bubonic epidemic in a small North African city and the resistance of a few decent men and women to the. brutal Nazi occupation of France in the Second World War. In both cases there were those who threw ‘up their hands and indulged themsélves in a ‘hopeless nihilism or a self-centred abdication from their own humanity...and those who saw the truth of the matter _-and did what they could, committee’; has’-acted’ only ” ‘individually. ; and “as: .-a. community, to resist the lie ~-of the “inevitable”. I gave the right answer to the right question, and J dare to say for all of us that we were right and the rest of the poor souls were misled to believe that) you can coexist peacefully with the Com- munists. We all should have voted against disarmament, whether it be. nuclear, conventional, biological or chemical weapons.
