The Consumer
Automotive Advisory
Council offers the following
list of car checks that you

- ‘should make periodically.

And if you can't do it per-
sonally, have your service
dealer do it for you.

1. Fluids - Check engine
oil, transmission oil, power
steering fluid and coolant.
Add as needed. CAUTION:
Never remove the radiator
pressure cap when the
engine is hot.

2. BATTERY - Check for
corrosion on terminals, a
common cause of starting

derinflation can cut tire life

under the hood. Is it time for
a lube job, oil and filter

Watch the thermostat

When your heater feels
more like an air conditioner’
on a frosty morning, your
personal discomfort may be

which lists several penalites
of driving oa cold-running
car. ”

The reason an engine runs
cold is that the thermostat is
malfunctioning. Its purpose
is to speed warm-up time
and provide maximum
engine cfficiency by
restricting the rate of
coolant flow through = the
radiator

the engine do not cxpand to
their proper clearances, fuel
cannot vaporize properly,

crankcase oil gets sludgy and
performance in general is
affected.

All this in addition to

* driving discomfort.

An_ improperly operating

. thermostat also can cause

the engine to run too hot,
which can be harmful in a
different way: Rapid wear or
possibly complete scizure of
the engine.

The institute says the
thermostat can be checked
by removing it from the
engine and suspending it ina
pan of water heated to the
tc mperature specified on the
thermostat housing. This is
the temperature at which the
thermosta: shou'¢ begin
opening.

A simpler procedure is to

have your service dealer
check the coolant tem-
perature with a temperature
guage inserted into the
radiator.

Thermostats, like other
mechanical devices, do not
last forever, and the crosive
action of the coolant
eventually takes its toll.
Consequently, a thermostat
of questionable depen-
dability should be replaced
with a new one.
