Alderman Bill Sorenson last week entered a notice of motion to permit the creation of a form of ac- comodation known as a “revenue suite,” in single family homes. The proposal would allow the owner of a house to keep a suite in the house for his own use while renting out the rest of the house. Currently, North Van- couver City homeowners are only allowed to establish so- called “family suites” which can be rented to relatives. The problem of illegal suites involves homes in single-family residential zones being divided into more than one unit for rental purposes. Sorenson's proposal would, in effect, make such illegal suites legal but carefully controlled and licensed. In his notice of motion he says the net effect of his proposed amendment to the zoning bylaw “would be INTEGRITY SSSR “< ASX ainless steel and 14kt gold Oyster case Jubilee bracelet Rolex t ady-Date self winding with stainless steeland 14kt gold Oyster Case Jubdee bracelet Both models guaranteed pressure proof down to 165 feet JEWELLERS THE STORE THAT KEEPS NORTH VANCOUVER TICKING AND TALKING 1598 LONSDALE AVE. 988-4717 legal revenue suites which met fire, health and other appropropriate municipal regulations.” “It should be noted this action would not give cause to developer speculation because only homes oc- cupied by the owner would be eligible.” “This,” he goes on, “would also tend to ensure a good quality of tenant and thus not upset the neighborhood balance.” Sorenson would require a suitable licence fee to be levied on the suites to cover inspections. Also, restrictions placed on the suites would include: limiting the suite to 50 per cent or less of the size of the house; only one such suite in each house; and no more than two adults in each suite. In his preamble, Sorenson says revenue suites would benefit seniors, young couples, single parents and students. Last week, Sorenson said he hoped a number of groups would appear before council Monday night to support the _ | idea when it is debated.
