become spiritually
bankrupt? Has the gift-
giving imperative oblitcrated
Christmas’ religious aspect?

Who is the de facro king of
Christmas? Jesus Christ or Santa
Claus? What is the reality of
Christrnas today? Frenzied con-
sumerism?

How to liberate the Christmas
spirit? Is it that the spiritual
strength of Christmas can only be
rediscovered in a contemplative,
spiritual environment free from
the cacophony of materialist self-
indulgence?

When we buy gifts, do we truly
believe that they represent a vol-
untary expression of love in the
name of Jesus Christ? Do we
want to buy gifts or is it because
i is expected?

Advertisers teli our children
what they want for Christmas.
Children ask for expensive pres-
ents and expect to receive them.
Can we teach our children the
spirit of true giving in this at-
mosphere?

Today, the act of perpetuating
the Christian tradition of ‘gift-
giving on religicus grounds is
suspect. But doesn’t our economy
depend on Christmas con-
sumerism? Do we net maintain
that the cultural thrust to spend
rauch money on merchandise is
connected to a holiday which
supposedly celebrates the birth of
the world’s most famous ascetic?

Good questions. We will con-
tinue to ask them. Meanwhile, we
can afford to ‘let it be’? and
know that charity, compassion
and understanding abide within us
all.

We can choose to go within and
ask for guidance and know that
there is a power divine within the
heari of all things which circum-
vents the universe of worlds and
brings the seu! of all cicated
things to final good.
