But car care shouldn't be limited to only spring and fall tune-ups, said Jack Teeple, shop foreman for Dick Irwin Chevrolet Oldsmobile Lid’s service depart- ment. Teeple said that vehicle manu- facturers have been known to deny a warranty if the owner has not been properly looking after the vehicle. “The first thing they ask for is verification of maintenance. If you don’t maintain your vehicle, the warraniy is going to be void,’’ he said. This can be a rude awakening for some car owners, but the solu- tion is simple — be sure to keep your vehicle maintained least, the minimum manufactur- er’s specificaticns and keep a re- cord of that maintenance. You can improve the lifespan of your brakes by checking the brake components and fluid more fre- quently and watching the way you brake if you often drive down steep inclines. Teeple suggests gearing down more, pumping the brake pedal, and having a light foot. Going into your local garage and asking for a spring tune-up will get you a variety of checks including replacement of the spark plugs and fuel filter, and a check of the air filter, coolants and belts. “With new cars, there isn’t a lot of adjustments that can be made,”’ he said, explaining that your mechanic used to be able to make minor adjustments to various car parts so that the vehi- cle would run more smoothly.
