What Panet Are You From? opens today at Park and Tilford. Pianet’s more like re @ What Planet Are You ” From? x * (out of 5) Directed by Mike Nichols. Starring Gary Shandling, Annette Bening, Greg Kinnear and Ben Kingsley. Opens today. SOPHOMORIC, underdeveloped and duli: a bit like my first boyfriend, What Planet Are You From? is a sur- prisingly mediocre film from veteran director Mike Nichols. What went wrong? Gary Shandling’s self- deprecating wit usually keeps audiences in stitches. Annette Bening is no slouch herself, well on her way to an Oscar win for American Beauty. Mike Nichols has proven his talents in both drama (Silkwood) and comedy (The Birdcage) genres. , But Nichols’ sci-fi comedy seems self-con- sciously lacking in purpose, direction, and worst of all, laughs. Shandling plays an alien with an alias: Harold Anderson, who's been sent to Earth to impregnate a woman. His all- male planet is going for intergalactic domina- tion, and despite their highly evolved, emo- tion- and genital-free state, they need a baby earthling to do so, , serene s eae wee es aciors bots then to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting where, hankies in hand, the men hit on the most vulnerable of the herd. After a rocky start, Harold woos Susan (Bening), whose clock is ticking double-time. No sex on the first date, marriage on the second. Susan doesn’t scem to mind that she knows nothing about Harold, or that there’s a distinctive humming sound coming from his crotch on their wedding night. It seems Anderson's new penis could have benefited from some tweaking before he left for Earth. The best exchange of the film takes place between Shandling’s character and Helen (Linda Fiorentino), who notices the odd noise while trying to seduce Harold: Harold: “It’s my penis. It hums.” Helen: “I guess it doesn’t know the words.” Funny, bat the humming penis thing gets tired quickly (if you'll pardon the pun). It’s one thing to build a movie around penis jokes ( There’s Something About Mars made millions doing it) but it’s quite another when a movie relies on the same penis joke to sustain two hours of faughter. There are some chuckles to be gleaned from the stereotypical male/female patterns of behaviour, which Harold toc readily falls into. After successfully getting Susan preg- nant, he retires to the sofa, remote in hand, and tends off pleas from Susan to communi- See Lazy Page 8 This week’s TV highlights >» Beggars & Choosers — tonight on BRAVO ch. 28 > The Lady Eve — Sunday on WIN ch. 20 > Jeni Legon — Monday on BRAVO ch. 28 FRIDAY M COMEDY Beaqaars and Choosers (BRAVO, Channel 28,8 pin.)
