N. Van Games turn profit

Walton.

The Games usually run a
deficit, which the host com-
munity absorbs.

Walton credited the suc-
cess of the event to the com-
munity for its volunteering
and fundraising.

“North Van is a great,
giving community,” said
Walton.

“There was a heck of a
job done fundraising.”

The district and city
chipped in $61,000 and focal
businesses contributed
$32,000 toward the Games.

More than 600 volunteers
were involved, working. at
the many sites throughout
the event.

The Games were based at
Capilano College, where the
250 athletes and their 150
attendants were hosted free
of charge.

Shirts sold at the Games
had a native logo designed
by 2 local First Nations artist,
and were so popular, they

_ quickly sold out.

Walton said the ogo will
be used again at future
Games.

' The Games are held
annuaily and draw athletes
with disabilities from across
the province.

Langley will host the
2000 Games.
