Calder, who works as a volun- teer for the B.C. Friends of Schizophrenics at the group’s pro- vincial and national levels, is one of seven Lower Mainland residents honored for volunteer work by . Health and Welfare Canada. The 61-year-old mother of six who retired from her North Shore practice this year, joined B.C. Friends of Schizophrenics six years - ago after reading a story in the North Shore News entitled, Schizephrenics in Need of Friends. She has since spent countless hours researching the disease and educating people about the disease, which is a méntal disorder marked by delusions and a disconnection of thoughts, feelings and actions, Calder’s achicvements include compiling the group’s first educa- tion kit, a collection of informa- tion about schizophrenia for new members; ard establishing new branches (of B.C: Friends throughcut the province. 4 She says of the 52 Canadians who received volunteer awards this year: ‘‘What we all have in com- mon is enormous dedication to our field of work and love for the people we are working for.’’; “-‘Ewo of Calder’s. sons; were diagnosed with schizophrenia at ages 14 and 30, which she says has f ‘given her even more reason to in- volve herself with the society. “These people (schizophrenics) are at the bottom of the pile. The stigma associated with the disease is extremely marked,”’ said Calder, § who has to date helped form 19 branches of B.C. Friends of Schizophrenics, including the North Shore branch, and 1! sup- port groups. “‘If you’re mentally sick you don’t have anyone to fight for you.”’ The Society is presently trying to oa: raise $500,000 to heip establish a ~ schizophrenia chair to promote . research of the disease at the Uni- versity of British Columbia, the first chair of its kind in North America. Calder meanwhile says she recommends volunteer work to everyone. ‘It’s a useful thing to work for others.
