Seventeen-vear-old Latin American dance. music diva in- the-making Uschi Levy was on the North Shore earlier this month to put the finishing touches to a debut dise soon to be released by West Vancouver-based Global Music Grouo Ltd. Development of the Argentinian’s musical career is one of the many musical pro- jects currently on the plate of Adam H. H. is a musician and the owner of Global Music Group, a company that has a recording studio in West Vancouver. He has licensing agreements in Latin America with BMG Entertainment and Polygram-distribured Max Music. Some of his own dance music has caught the imagination of the massive youth market in Mexico. {t seems that beat- happy tunes rule where the sun shines brightly. The Latin American music scene has grown by leaps and bounds and is said to be the fastest growing market seg- ment in the industry. Ir’s also a springboard to a growing pool of Spanish-speaking people living to the north, along the southern U.S. strip from California to Florida. Meet Uschi for lunch and you soon find she doesn’t like sushi. She’s quick to reveal, howev- er, the time a message in a Chinese fortune cookie confirmed a major change in her young life. It all started in December, 1997. Uschi was in Miami on Christmas Eve. The Buenos Aires teen was on holiday with her fam- ily in Miami. “We were starving. Everything was closed at six. There was a Chinese restau- rant which was open and my sister (Marina, 8), she only eats burgers and chicken nuggets. “So she didn’t want to go there. We went there. It was the only thing open so it was full. We had to wait. I stayed there and Pm waiting fora table and I started humming. “This girl comes to me and says, “Were you the one singing?’ So I said yah, why? She said, “Do you speak Spanish? Will you come and sing outside for me in front of some people?’ “Why not?” “So I started singing and my father comes and sees me singing for 15 people and he goes, ‘What’s happening here?’ This girl comes to my “Pve had a great opportunity. Uschi’s parents are helping to fund her career, Pablo, her father, iravelled with her the first time to Vancouver. Said Uschi, “They could have said, ‘Lock we can’t afford it, Who's going to be there?” We dida’t know anything about them (Adam H. and compa- ny), but somehow, for some reason, they agreed and we came.” Perhaps the leap of faich was pushed by the family’s pase. hi’s grandfather, Heinz, and grandmoth- er, also named Usehi, are from Unkel am Rhein in Germany: Her grandmother sang in clubs. Uschi I great-grandmother taught singing in Germas v. Her mother Adriana, is from Argentina. Papa Pablo was born in Argentina, after her grandfather went to the country during the Second World War. On her debut dise she sings in Spanish and English. Says Uschi, “Ive had a great opportu- nity. It’s the door to get into something big and I hope they do a good job. I still have to finish high school, It’s (singing) what I want to do with my lite. “In Argentina it’s pretty hard to be a singer. If vou are not well known it’s pretty hard to make a career. I was in the right spot in the right moment and this happened to me. I guess Pm starting in Mexico City and going down to Argentina.” According to Global Music vice president Andre Urrea, Max Music has agreed to release Party 2 Night in English and Spanish. If it does well it will be released in South America and then Europe. “We're going to be showing more music of what she’s been recording to Max Music and BMG in Mexico and we'll see who picks her up first again. We're looking for a major record deai right now. She'll be famous in no time. That’s all you hear in Latin America — dance music and Spanish ballads.
