The program airs Sunday at 10 p.m. on TV-12. : Red tapes show 31 RED’S Classic Theatre producer Rick Read has been with the KVOS (TV-12) show since the second program. He looks back at the fun times they’ve had as they celebrate the 500th show on Sunday, April 18 at 10 p.m. with a screening of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home on location in Monterey California. ° “In 10 years of shows, we’ve been on ferry boats, hydrofoils, kayaks, luxury yachts and cruise ships. i, ve flown in WWI Harvards, two or cs Of | cs of gliders, military helicopters is sub-chaser aircraft (one of the most fan shots Lever got to shoot was from the door of a helicopter fying 30 feet ¢ Harrison Lake heading for the Harrison Hot Springs Hotel). We've worked with dogs, tigers, snakes, horses, orcas sea lions, birds. We roasted in the 90-plus degree temperatures of Tortilla Flats, Arizona and froze out behinds on Mr Baker and at Biackcomb. We've been as far away as Great Britain and as close as Red’s home. We've shot at drug stores, lumber yards, . video stores and in the fanciest hotels, at the best restaurants. We've visited military bases, baseball pitching and hitting schools, breweries, hydro-electric plants, college campuses, art galleries, parks, individual homes. We actually shot a show once that never aired — show 420, Sept., 1997 — we visited Place Des Art in Coquitlam. All went well until we got back to the station, only to discover that TV12 did not own the movie rights for the film we had just spent the day talking about. So, a replacement movie was picked, a new script written, and we returned to Place Des Art the next day to shoot another show. When Red’s not around, I tell people “Red’s Classic Theatre is my show — Red’s just the pretty face”. The movies are not selected by Red — as many peo- ple believe, but are selected cach month by our president and general manager, Dave Reid, and executive producer Margot Wilson. After that, I choose the location — which is usually not a prob- lem, as we often get more viewer requests or requests from our sales staff than we can handle. Scriptwriter Bob Mutis usually visits the location to get info for the script and to alert me to any special challenges. Bob and I both do research for the movies. Bob sends me the script, I often rewrite to adjust the script to match the photos I’ve found to cover the stories we'll be telling. On shoot days, I shoot and direct Red, with the help ofa production —_. assistant. Most of the next three days I edit and assemble the show just shot, choose a location for 3 or 4 weeks down the road, research the next couple of — movies, rewrite what Bob has sent me. Basically finish the show just shot and prepare for the shoot the next week. It’s been 500 shows and 10 years of for TY-12 great experiences. But the best part of it all has been the pleasure of working with a man whom I can safely say is one of my very best friends. I would do anything in the world for Red Robinson, and I know he would do anything for me. It doesn’t get any better than thar.” Shows shot on the North Shore: — Capilano Suspension Bridge (47 09/89), Buick Berle Show, The Caine Mutiny. #2 — Red’s House (01/10/89), Carson’s Cellar, the Honeymooners, Tommy. #17 ~ North Shore Studios ( 14/01/90), The Gold & the Glory, The Mirror Crack’d. #19 — Grouse Mountain (28/01/90), Goodyear Playhouse, M*A*S*H, #55 — Pt.
