Nardwuar and Evanorators music review BUY these CDs for Christmas. I like them very much. You should know that they are out there. Evaporators — Empire Loyalists, Nardwuar the Human Serviette Records Inc. 1996 Mr. Nardwuar revels in the arcane intricacies of popu- lar musical culture. He has absorbed much from our own great country and now he is filling our heads with hybrids of what he has found. Somebody ought to give this fresh fellow from West Vancouver a television pro- gram of his very own. Mr. Nardwuar has perfect- ed the fine art of ambush journalism. His audio and video snippets of encounters with former presidents and rock ‘n’ roli misfits are leg- endary. So too should be the music. This Evaporators disc is a hoot. It’s outrageous and irritatingly charming. The Nard rawks. He also gets to the point. In a gritty encounter with Mr. Alice Cooper we hear him puncture the pompous core of an uptight mega-has- been. It’s a fantastic package — vinyl, a free CD and a record- size sleeve that folds open like a cardboard flower to reveal an incredibly detailed set of liner notes, photos and a mas- sive full-color poster of Mr. Nardwuar and cohorts, United project entirely from his own pocket and we would do well to support him in this most worthy Canadian venture. The Rolling Stones — Rock And Roll Circus, ABKCO Records Crusty but mighty nour- ishing. It was recorded in December of 1968 for a BBC television show that was never aired. The Stones are at their height as a group play- ing live. Great blues tracks — Parachute Woman, No Expectations — provide the surprises, Guest super-group The Dirty Mac (John Lennon, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and Mitch Mitchell) scorch with Yer Blues. Jethro Tull, The Who, Taj Mahal and Mick's main squeeze of the week, Marianne Faithfull, share the circus ring fora neat little time capsule of vital period. Suzanne Vega — Nine Objects of Desire, A&M Records 1996 Vega is a poet in folk-diva disguise. Every word counts. Mitchell Froom and Tchad Blake make it sound swell. Intelligent and essential pop. Kate & Anna McGarrigle — Matapedia, Rykodise 1996 New material doesn’t come along often enough. We have a new disc and it’s a keeper. Lovely harmonies, delicate musical textures and much enriching observation. The Boomers — Thousand Days, Records 1996 Tan Thomas exploits the anxiety of middle age to fine effect. Hum along too as you pat your paunch and pluck the hairs from your ear holes. Jimmy Scott — Heaven, Warner Bros. Records 1996 He’s small, elderly and black. He has the voice of an angel. All of the songs are about heaven. It is bliss. THEATRE: Waldorf to perform Oberufer Shepherds Play VANCOUVER Waldorf Schoo! presents its annual Christmas offering, the Oberufer Shepherds Play. A nuinber of families have framed Santa in a drive to make this Christmas better than ever, Of the two, Carousel Theatre's The Nightingale is the better ber. The play is based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Emperor’s Nightingale and still owes much to its folk- story origins in thar it is essentially plot, rather than char- acter, driven, Ir’ s essentially a morality play that teaches pride is a sin and that nature cannot be duplicated. However, there is much fine characterization from a unitormly stony cast under the careful direction of Kim Selody and enough gente humor along the way to keep the adults interested. If your child is old enough to follow a story but still young enough to believe in magic, The ghtingale makes a pleasant Christmas change trom Carousel’s traditional musical - A Christuras Carel, To December 24.
