Wednesday, August 3, 1994 - Norlh Shore News - 19 vs * ERR PANT ere Tar Modern dance keeps choreographer busy From page 18 weight and image.“ Kleeman danced with the Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers for six years, then switched hats to begin concentrating on her own work, (Kleeman has spent the last three years creating her own repertoire. and says she isn’t inter- ested in performing other people's work — at least not for now.) So it was ironic to hear that one of the highlights of her career was her work on a dance film, a collaboration with fellow Winnipeg dancer Fiona Drinnan. “The film itselfavas a bunch of difficult images and, to be perfect- ly honest, the music was a kind of noise —- there was no melody. The reason it was a highiight, ! think, was because it was .o hard to do.” ’ Despite that success, she’s not sure she would do it again. “I enjoy wor'.ing with composers but cel aborating with another cho, eographer is just too hard. | ‘ave very set ideas about what | want to do.” Lately, those ideas have to do with developing her own style of movement. While she has trouble describing it in words, husband AUGUST Tom Fijal sums up best, “Ve hada little puppy al the studio once who we called ‘No Bones Barney’ because he just flopped around. Tom said that some of the work | do looks as if | have no bones. It's very fluid; [don’t doa lot of shapes.” Since moving to Vancouver in 1990, Kleeman has had no short- age of work, performing at Dancing on the Edge, Women in View and Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival. She says it’s taken a lot of hard work carving out a name for her- self, but in all these-years she has never once considered quitting. “I don’t want to give the impression that dance is thriving,” she says, “because it is a struggle. But you can’t be negative.” Peter Bingham, artistic director of EDAM whose psychological exploration A Shadow of Myself will be one of the works featured tomorrow night, agrees. . ’ “Yes, it’s easy to be negative (about the state af dance), but I have to take Desirée’s side. The work itself is getting better and I'm encouraged by it. Sure, there are troubles with audience, but that is solved by the works getting better.” 13 & 14 SAUGERTIES,NY PAY-PER-VIEW WILL TAKE .
