A Caring Community _ The Psy chiatric Emergency Nurses (PEN) Program is "Successful Beyond Imagination" It’s Saturday night in an overcrowded emergency department at Lions Gate Hospital. A call comes in that a cardiac arrest is arriving in 5 minutes. Just then, a psychiatric case is brought in, The patient is loud and belligerent. Medications aren’t working. The nu..es on the psych ward are dealing with an existing crisis and are unable to help. Pressed for time and with the cardiac Patient now arriving, Security has to be called in. The above scenario describes an actual’emergency situation at Lions Gate Hospital. Ir illustrates what life was like before a new team of Psychiatric Emergency Nurses (PENs) joined the department. Now instead of calling Security ro handle a psychiatric patient in crisis, a highly trained PEN is on site 10 hours a day, 7 days a week to help provide immediate assessment and ‘one-on-one care. “PENs see about a hundred patients a month,” says Colleen Olmstead, Head Nurse, Inpatient Psychiatry. “They provide personalized care, and with a knowl- edge of both the psychiatry and emergency units, they are invaluable in working with the physician and nurses to determine the best course of treatment.” PENs Work! The PEN program has proven to be a great success. “Ir has been successful beyond anyone’s imagination,” says Gillian Harwood, Director of Nursing, Critical Car: and Psychiatry. “Patients now spend less time waiting in Emergency and receive less medication before being transferred to the ward. Ail” patients discharged to the community have follow-up compared to only 55 per cent prior to the program.” PEN Pat Wignall with 1 of 1800 patients seen since prog ara began Talk About PENs Here are a few of the many comments received from a recent evaluation survey of the new Psychiatric Emergency ursing Program: & Great Program! The information (histories etc.) are excellent and give our staff invaluable information in the assessment process. % Patients often request a consultation with the PEN first.
