The federal deficit for fiscal year 1993 is estimated at $46 bil- lian, a record for this country, and on a per capita basis probably one of the worst records in the entire ester world. ‘Our provincial debt is in excess of $17 billion! The accumulated federal debt has just hit $500 billion while the combined debts of the 10 provinces total nearly $300 billion. Together they exceed Canada’s gross domes- tic product (GDP) of $710 billion. The last occasion our govern- ment accounts were in this bad shape was the final year of the Second Worid War when the debt ‘ ratio hit 144%. Then we had a dif- ferent battle to fight. One of the big shifts this past year has been the underground - Tiffany Hanging Lamp | now only § economy that has sprouted up as a result of the GST. The new revenue minister recently announced that an estimated 7.5% of the GDP goes unreported as people turn to this ‘underground economy. Canadians cannot wait to sce the idiotic GST abolished. An acquaintance of mine sug- gested a small but rather appronri- ate way of reducing the federal deficit. He suggested that the 5,060 bean counters who were hired by the Mulroney government to administer the GST be let go. While it would help to reduce the deficit by a mere $200 million, think of all the joy it would bring Canadians the day these bureau- crats got their pink slips. If our Parliament understood the mood of Canadians they would know better than to try to reassign these bean counters to olner “ere- ative duties” within the already bloated civil service.
