A few weeks before new year, Iraniait family members buy gifts for each other. About eight or 10 days before new year, each family plants wheat or lentil. By Nowruz -(new year), the wheat is 10 to 15 em high and appears like grass. Before. new year, Iranians spread a tablecloth on a table or the floor of their living rooms. They put the Koran, a mirror, and a candle on the tablecloth. They also put seven special things whose names start with an **s" on the tablecloth. The seven things are called, Haftseen, which means the seven ‘‘s.”’ The seven things each have a speviai meaning and include the _ following: @ Seer (garlic): it symbolizes driv-" ing away the enemy; © Serkeh (vinegar): ing; @ Samanoo (juice of germinating wheat or malt mixed with flour): abundance; @ Seeb (apple): health; @ Senjed (oleaster): and plantation; @ Sabzeh (grass): happiness and freshness; @ Sekkeh (coin): safeguarding in- come. Sumac and sonbol (hyacinth) can be subsituted in the seven items. In addition, cooked and painted eggs are added to the tablecioth Presentation to symbolize grace. Also, on the 13th day of the new year festival, Iranian families put some sweets-or candies in the wheat they sowed previously. They take the wheat outside their homes, usually to a farmer’s field with a creek, and throw the wheat into flowing water. It is believed, or wished, that all unluckiness goes away with the water. Sometimes on the 13th day, Iranian families have a picnic and also celebrate the new vear. This ‘ event is called seezdehbedar.
