Wednesday, February 3, 1993 - North Shore News ~ 7 Finlay, Livingstone, Bancroft Fed up with Lions Gate Bridge Dear Editor: I have lived in West Vancouver for a number of years and plan to stay for many more. However, I'm absolutely fed up with the lack of progress regard- ing the Lions Gate Bridge. prob- lem. ‘ The government, however, can- not be held entirely responsible for this problem. Many North Shore residents have repeatedly voiced their opi- nions against freer flow of traffic. They. present arguments such as “a third crossing or a wider bridge will simply lead to more traffic and soon these new arteries will be choked too; look at Los Angeles, for example...”* If that argument were valid then the Burrard, Granville and Cam- bie street bridges should be clogg- ed up all the time. ' ‘The other argument often heard is: “‘easing traffic flow will only encourage to move to the North Shore and that is undesirable.” If our federal and provincial governments have concluded that immigration is good for Canada and the provinces, then surely it must be good for the municipalities. We all know the benefits: ‘widened’ tax base, increased cus- tomer base for local businesses and decreased unemployment, to Collins wrong ~ about women, gay Warriors ‘ Dear Editor: As a military: historian, 1 must take exception. to Doug Collins’ claim that ‘there has never been a full-scale war in which proud poofters and women fought in the front: line’. (‘Your war cor- respondent” itching for / another - battle,”’ Jan. 20). Ancient Greek armies. of the ’ Persian Wars era.consisted almost entirely of such ‘‘proud poofters.’”’ ~The Theban Sacred Battalion, _ which perished to the last man at Chaeronea in'338 BC,:was com- ~ posed of homosexual couples. The . awe-inspiring Mamelukes, ‘who: “confronted Napoleon in Egypt, were gay not only in their “ manner of dress. . As for women, we may. recall “the Amazon troops of Dahomey, who . battled ferociously against the’ French Foreign Legion. in 1892, and thousands of female resistance fighters in .the . Nazi- occupied Europe, not to mention such well-known Joan of Arc and Emilia Plater. It is also worth. remembering that. many. outstanding: military -and political leaders, from | Alcibiades and: Julius Caesar. to . Cecil Rhodes: and Lawrence, of Arabia, were quite unorthodox in .. their sexual mores... A brave man or woman is just ‘that, despite his or her sexual ori- entation, and Collins (an ex- soldier, himself) would: do. well to "respect this very obvious truth. There has been talk of exten- ding the Skytrain to the North Shore. That would certainly help, but it won’t solve the vehicular traffic problems; people are simply not going to abandon their cars in favor of the Skytrain overnight. There have been many studies undertaken and I’m sure many more still to be implemented in order to find the best solution to this problem: a_ third - crossing, widening the bridge, and soon. I believe our first priority is to recognize the urgency of this problem and to take action and do something about it now, then worry about the most efficient system or design. As for the government not hav- ing any money to pay for such projects, the government has never had enough money and probably never will. My answer is charge a toll; J, for one, will gladly pay. Terry Williamson West Vancouver Can development be stopped? Dear Editor: I was very upset and sadden- ed to see the only patch of un- disturbed natural forest at Ambleside Park tampered with by the recent cutting of trees behind the bowling alley. It's like an ugly wound to the one wildlife sanctuary in the park. I read in the North Shore News Jan. 6 that the Park Royal development, in their wisdom, are going to “enhance’’ the area with a unique glitzy golf course. Where does Mr, Amantea live? There it goes — our one SETA NT ANNUAL WATER RATES rau misvater or beautiful area of accessible rec- reation, Where is the Squamish Band’s commitment to nature now? It wouldnt be grasping for more money, would it? Once the federal government in Ottawa gave the community land back to the band without so much as a “by your. leave,’” in secret and with no public in- tervention by the municipal authorities, { suppose it was only a matter of time.
