MAILBOX Hillside protesters bent on winning fight at all costs Open letter to Barbara Howard, West Vancouver Schoo! Board: As a participant of the West Vancouver School Board meeting on Monday, April 5, | observed that the core group of protesters against the sale of Hillside School and the Caulfeild Plateau project have totally lost sight of their ob- jectives and seem bent on just winning their fight at alt costs. Increase education funding Open letter to The Hon. Anita Hagen, Minister of Education: 1 am a parent with three children who attend Cleveland Elementary School in North Van- couver. I am also extremely concerned with the budget cutbacks that are occurring because of underfunding by the provincial government. Our district will receive cuts on a number of programs and total elimination of programs that have been established for many years in this district. My children and all the children in this particular district will be affected. As a North Vancouver resident, I pay (as do others) amongst the highest education taxes in the province, and our district receives less than 96% of the provincial average back. We've established many pro- grams that are admired by other districts. Why not allow us all to have the programs that will con- tinue the education that our children deserve? They are our future. Why handicap them? Give them what they need or their future and ours will be in a poor state. Don't. they deserve the best? Your government came [nto power on a platform committed to quality cducation.. Don't just mesmerize us with words, please do something and increase the funding now.- Maureen C. Topley North Vancouver Some streets in need of quick sweep Dear Editor: Hear, hear, to Gwen Clark's comments on the dirty Lonsdale streets. The section from Chesterfield Street to Lonsdale on West 3rd is particulasly bad. A vacant lot is even being used as a dump site! And the blobs of brightly col- ored bubble gum glued to the sidewalks of Lonsdale ... no wonder Singapore has banned it. I know the shopkeepers are not to blame for dirty streets, but surely a quick ‘“‘sweep-up’’ at their front doors would help the ; situation. In spite of the fact that there are waste-paper bins at some of the bus stops one can still see wrappers of all kinds thrown under the seat. This is such a beautiful city — why can’t our citizens learn to keep it clean? C. McLean North Vancouver I believe that a compromise be- tween the west and east sides of West Vancouver is possible and every effort should be made to br- ing these radical screaming mat- ches to an end so that we can get on with the issue at hand, which is, of course, providing the western portion of West Van- couver with adequate facilities. If the eastern community wants a high school that their children can attend in their own communi- ty, I suggest that West Vancouver Secondary be given to them as a full school, offering up to and in- cluding Grade 12. Then the Caulfeild Plateau School would also include up to Grade 12. Having three fully graded high schools in West Vancouver would foster a competitive spirit, a sense N. Due to space constraints the North Shore News cannot of patriotism, and the ability to compete in field days and sports games as well as academically. As for the floss of Hillside School, well, the school has few if any redeeming quatities, save for the fact that it’s still standing, and the alternative could be an attrac- tive enhancement to that area. If the Plateau School cannot be totally funded by the sale of the Hillside property, then perhaps the school board, being penny poor but property rich, could fi- nance the remainder by selling off some of these assets. { firmly believe that we must embrace change, especially where it concerns our children’s future and education.
