‘Crazy wisdom’

provokes

freedom

I LOVE the ‘‘highest’’ card in the Tarot, ‘‘The Fool’’ and
am a proponent of, among other things, ‘‘crazy wisdom,”’
which is common to genuine spiritual traditions the world

over.

Whatever their fevel of realiza-
tion, these crazy wise teachers, by
virtue of their spontaneous and
free orientation to spiritual prac-
tice, often transformed the
religious conventions of their time
... freed people from the stultify-
ing influence of traditions grown
rigid and dogmatic.

The actions of these crazy ser-

.vants of humankind have often

provoked outrage.

By tneir very existence, these
teachers demonstrate that our
secure, sheltered universe is not as
safe as it seems. We are loathe to
reconsider the shaky premises
upon which our lives are built. We
are afraid to regard life as it really
is.

Human beings have always been
struggling to realize another con-
dition because we intuitively know
that there is scmething about our
present state, no matter how
orderly it may appear, that is

‘disturbed. There is an inherent

disturbance associated with the
saost orderiy kind of ordinariness.
Most of us can acknowledge this.

This conventional state of the-

ego is a kind of ‘‘insanity.’’
Everyone. is motivated toward
release by the inherently disturbed

” sense of self. This is our great ad-

vantage. We already transcend ego
through our. disturbance. It is
therefore not to be suppressed.
We can use that energy, that
motivation. . .

The means by which the free
adept stirs up one basic sense of
disturbaace and puts us in contact
with the motivation toward release
are not necessarily orderly, pleas-
ant or polite. But this is only one
aspect of the ‘‘crazy wise’’ teach-

er.
It is also true that he/she can be ©

the most amiable, charming,
gracious and gentle of beings. It is
simply that he/she is not limited

by good manners and social con- -

ventions. . :

As a radical teacher has
remarked, ‘‘The ‘Lord’ is wild,
the ‘Lord’ is a vast fire, not a
gentieman.”’ And the adept, who
is the transparent vehicle of ‘‘the
Lord,”’ is no gentleman or lady,
either!

But the intent is never simply to
shock or offend. His/her every
action is motivated by love and by
compassionate urge to draw others
beyond the imprisonment of the
ego. His/her ‘actions are free, and
they are meant to provoke
freedom in others. One of the
signs of this freedom is the great
Aumor often displayed by the
crazy wise.
