The Buigarian Women’s Choir dazzies T SURELY ranks as the most profoundly unex- pected musical cross-over success story since Tiny Tim tiptoed through the tulips. In 1987, Middle-aged Bulgarian women bearing clearly melodic and cleverly harmonic giits, scaled pop chart ladders that were more often the domain of thrashing, keening, guitar-wielding youth. The utter audacity inherent in the collision of cultures would have been enough to sustain a _ modicum of success in a time of general searching for new sounds on the politically correct World Beat tront. Yet here we are, four years since the 1987 Nonesuch Records release of Le Mystere Des Vor Bulgares (The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices) and the fascination with the mysterious Slavic Choristers continues. The Bulvarian State Femaic Vocal Choir returns to Vancouver &p.m., Friday April 19 to pertorm at the acoustically commodious Orpheum Theatre. The choir members, repre- senting the many rexions ot Bulgaria, join the chetr on the Theatre B.C. g SPRING MARKS the beginning of the annual Theatre B.C. 1991 North Shore Zone Festival of Plays. Michael Becker RECORD REVIEW vibrato and a basis of stringent competition. North American critics have gushed mightily in response to the crisp choral sound: “continually astonishing’’ — The New York Times: “the most beautiful nyusic on the pianet’” — St. Louis Post Dispatch; ‘a kind of passionate belting’ — New York Post: ‘ deliciousiv dissonant” — San Francisco Chronicle; “the hip- pest show on earth” — L.A. Weekly. And the gushing is appropriate. The 24 voices appeal on a number of gut levels: * The Look -— is anti-star. With ages and body-types all over the spectrum, there is a refreshing rodtedness in the real world not and its companion piece, The Ac- tor’s Nightmare (Apr, 24). Sister Mary is a biting, irreverent, uproariously tunny satire which aims its barbs at organized religion — and strikes home with hilarious results, On Apr. 25 West Vancouver Theatre tackles A.R. Gurney Jr.'s - The Cocktail Hour. |In this drama Gurney explores the relationship of a son who returns to his lamily to ask his father's permission to produce his latest play. The next evening Whistler Players presents Peace Is...a play about, you guessed it, peace. This work was written with the help of people from varied backgrounds. The last entry in the festival is The Cagebirds. Presented by Im- pact Theatre (Seycove Theatre) this drama explores how people and society, rather than face the truth, destroy it. Adjudicator lan Fenwick will select the winners following The Cagebirds.
