A common mistake is made when a tall man hangs a picture at his standing eye level. If the ob- jects hung on the wail are usually viewed from a sitting position, they should be hung at the seated person’s eye level. Also, never Tips to prevent agony From page 13 of the methods you can use to avoid unnecessary pain and suf- fering when working in the garden. It all starts with posture. You should always keep your back as close to a vertical position as possible when lifting heavy ob- jects. Every time you bend over, you are putting your back at risk; ei- sher get help or try to use some of the techniques included in this ar- ticle. | You've heard it before, but it is so important that J must say it again: Use your knees — not your back! If you must bend over to pick up an object which is low to the ground, bend your knees, not your back. The last posture no-no involves twisting your torso while carrying heavy burdens. If you must turn around while under a load, use your legs rather than trying to turn at the hip. The most common cause of back injury occurs when moving heavy objects from one area to another. Plan to let some form of equip- ment do the work for you. Something as simple as getting the best use out of a wheelbarrow or dragging heavy objects around on the blade of a shovel can save you hours of agony. Rather than risking harm by lif- ting that rock into the wheelbar- row, try tipping the wheelbarrow on its side and using a lever to move the rock into the bucket. Now you can right the barrow and haul the rock to anywhere you like. If a heavily loaded wheelbarrow begins to tip over, let it go. Wrestl- ing with it may save you the pain of having tc clean up a mess but this is better than the pain of a wrenched back. If you do not have a wheelbar- row, roll the rock onto the blade of a shovel and drag it. This works on heavy plants which need to be moved as well, If the shovel feels awkward, use a tarp or anything else which will reduce the friction between that which you are sliding and the ground, Use the car jack to pull small stumps out of the ground or to realign a leaning fence. Use a come-along or pulleys to straighten out a tree or lift heavier objects out of the ground. The use of brute force should be left to the brutes. The difference between a mule and man should be more than long ears and a tail. Take the time to think about what you are trying to accomplish and take time to devise the easiest method of achieving your goal. In other words, use your head instead of neing muie-h headed, place objects so low above a chair or sofa that they will be bumped if someone leans back; allow eight to 12 inches. Jt’s a good idea when arranging objects on a wall to first tape sheets of paper, the exact dimen- sion of what you plan to hang, to the wall. This will allow you to move them around until you have achieved the best arrangement. Then it is easy to mark the spot for the hanger. Another good rule is to keep the distance between the pictures half the width of the frame. Do not crowd objects together. Also, give them anchors; a table placed below a large picture keeps it from look- ing lost. Objects on the table also help create balance.
