FASHION 35 - Sunday, July 16, 1989 - North Shore News Walk down the aisle in style FROM THE time a woman becomes engaged until she weds, she steps into a fantasy world of exciting experiences, elaborate plans and lots of impcrtant deci- sions, On her wedding day, the bride and her bridal party take centre Stage for many hours. The ac- cessories they choose can make the Designer stays From page 14 and loyal, Sturdy says. Soine of them have been with her since they emigrated from their mother coun- tries. She, in turn, has taught them everything she knows about mak- ing jewelry. Sturdy says that the Canadians “whining”? about the influx of Chinese to Canada are missing out. They should learn from the Chinese work ethic, and their culture, and their sense of family. Sturdy’s work is secondary — she doesn’t let it dictate her lifestyle. But she says her life and her en- vironment — everything from her waterfront West Vancouver home to her factory workshop — are the source of her art. “It depends on what my en- vironment is and what my attitude is at that time. Sometimes I’m more feminine so I do more whim- sical things. that are lighter. Some- times I’m more conservative so I work in that direction, and some- times I’m very flamboyant,”’ Stur- dy says, ‘ it really depends on my observation of my world, of fash- ion, my travelling, the economy — all those things that affect a human being and then when you come out with whatever you’re do- ing it’s a reflection of that. That's the way it should be, it’s supposed to be.” An artist’s work should follow an evolution, Sturdy says. It grows with the artist in a particular direc- tion. “‘A good designer starts at the core because otherwise you don’t have a reai line — a story —- of what ycu are as a human being so how can you design things? You just knock off things. But if you look at my work it has an evoilz- tion and it keeps peppening and 1 ‘ changing. It’s a contin evolution versus I do this and then difference between looking good and looking sensational. Dyed-to-match satin or lace shoes are the perfect complement to a color-accented wedding gown, as well as a necessity to complete the look for a truly ‘‘iugether’* bridal party. Kinney Shoes offers these hints for choosing the best accessories true to herself I change to something totally dif- ferent.”’ Sturdy attributes her rapid rise in the fashion world to her knowl- edge of self. Although she'd been designing and making jewelry and clothes long before art school, she didn’t pursue it as a career until she was 32 when she graduated from Emily Carr College of Art and Design . At the time she, was married to her first husband, with three children, the youngest age eight. “I was a grown up. Whereas, if I'd finished art school at 23 or 22 you could:’t do what I did. But because I’d already lived a life, had kids, been sensible, been Stable, been reasonable and real- istic, it was easy to go from where I was to where I am.”’ She says her age and experience gave her an advantage over young designers. “| have with maturity defined my design sense — I know what I am. So when I designed things 1 had a very strong point of view because that’s what I was.** And one doesn’t question this Sturdy proclamation. Self-doubt is not a word in her vocabulary. At 47, Sturdy has no plans for fetirement. “If I do retire in one direction, I'll be doing something else, maybe sculpture.’’ She remarried nine months ago and has, with her husband David, bought a farm in Pemberton where sie says they plan to spend more time. Next Tuesday through Thurs- day, Sturdy is holding a ‘‘junk”’ sale at her factory on 16 West 5th in Vancouver. From noon to & p.m., jewelry hunters sill be able to buy Sturdy originals at wholesale prices. And if they’re really lucky, they might have the opportunity to meet Kate . It would be well worth the trip. UNIFORM SHGP “ WOODWARDS ANNOUNCES SURMER SALE STARTING KRY 15, 1989 SELECTED REGULAR QUAL HEAD STETHO.
