16 -— Sunday, June 25 . 1989 - North Shore News FASHION Protect skin from sun’s harmful rays THAT TOASTY tan you're plan- ning to work on this summer can develop into serious skin diseases. Research has uncovered some startling facts about the long-term effects .of the sun ’s rays on the skin, Medical experts have known since the 1950s that overexposure to the sun causes skin cancer. . tatistics show that 23 per cent of the people who developed a ma- lignant melanoma (a fast-growing, potentially fatal form of skin cancer) died, because the cancer progressed beyond the possibility of treatment. And now doctors are saying skin cancer has become widespread — it is now the most common form of cancer — and is posing a serious health hazard. How serious? Ac- cording to experts, among the 40,000 cases of skin cancer that were diagnosed in Canada in 1988, 2,200 were’ melanoma. Of these victims, 500 will die. In the 1930s, the incidence of melanoma among Canadians was _ about one in 10,000. Now, about one in 150 Canadians will develop skin cancer by age 70. Recognizing the dangers, dele- gates to the annual meeting of the Registered Nurses Association of B.C. voted May 5 to ask the Ministry of Health to develop education programs to make peo- ple more aware of the relationship between exposure to the sun and skin disease,, —: Mémbers of the Association’s Vernon Chapter-stressed the health risks associated with exposure to the sun. They explain that of the three ultraviolet rays produced by the sun, Ultraviolet A and Ultraviolet B (UVA and UVB) penetrate the skin, It is now realized that UVA is also dangerous. Unlike UVB, which is strongest between-10 a.m. and 3 p.m., UVA is around all day. And it’s strong all year round, not just in summer, like UVB. Sun protection’ products focus on blocking UVB, allowing for ex- tended periods of exposure with virtually no symptoms. But this is false protection. Researchers have found that UVA can have some devastating effects on your skin. UVA actually weakens the skin cells and suppresses the immune system. The nurses offer several recom- mendations that will help minimize sun damage to the skin. Use a sunscreen with the sun protection factor (SPF) ap- propriate to your skin type. For those who burn easily, this means a SPF of 15 or greater. For people with skin that burns frequently and tans lightly, the SPF should be between eight and 15. An SPF of six is usually effec- tive for those with dark skin that tans easily and doesn’t burn. To be safe, however, everyone should use protection between eight and 15. Carefully check the label when choosing a sunscreen. Be sure it contains an effective screening agent for both UVA and UVB light. Effective UVB screens are PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) and DABA (esters and cin- namiates). Effective UVA screens are ben- zophenones, including ox- ybenozone, methoxybenzone and sulfisobenzone. Avoid direct sunlight during the intense periods when UVB is at its strongest — between 10 a.m. and 3 .m, The nurses also suggest that parents protect their children, and keep babies under one year out of direct sunlight. Toddlers and older children may be out in the sun if sunscreen is applied. Choose from an extraordinary collection of selected BALLY AMALFI ... men’s and women’s shoes, plus handbags.
