; t Police warn of bogus fire man A MAN posing as a focal fire department representative is active in the North Vancouver area again, North Vancouver RCMP responded to a complaint in the 200- block of West Gth Street March 19. The homeowner was solicited by a man requesting entry to the home to conduct a fire safety in- spection. The offer included the promise of a tree tire extinguisher. Neither of the Gwo North Vancouver fire departments are cur- rently conducting fire inspection surveys. Police deseribe the man as Caucasian, 5° 10°", clean cut, 25 to 30 years old and carrying a black vinyl folder. Residents approached by the man are asked to contact the police at 985-1311. The man was active in the area with a similar ploy several months ago. Youths nabbed with hot car WEST VANCOUVER Police pulled over a car on the Squamish Highway Sunday suspecting they had nabbed a drinking driver and instead caught two juveniles with a hot car. Neither of the juveniles, aged 16 and 37, had a driver's licence, The car had been taken from an Oregon tourist visiting Whistler. The two will be charged with possession of stolen property. Huge slide closes highway A HUGE rockstide late Tuesday evening dumped close to 2,500 cubic metres of stony debris onto the Squamish Highway near Strip Creek, but no one was injured. Construction work has been ongoing in the area and the location was the site of a smaller rockslide fast summer. A highways spokesman said three 1,000-tonne boulders, the size of 2 small cottage each, were among the debris that came tumbling down at 11:20 p.m. The highway was reopened 7 a.m. Wedoesday. The highway surface was damaged und there was minor damage to nearby BC Rail irackaye. Heavy rains combined with past blasting in the area are believed to have destabilized the rock face. ' Diving gear stolen in NV NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP are asking for public assistance in their investigation of 3 $10,000 theft of diving equipment. The theft occurred sometime between March 5 and March {6 in an apartment located in the 100 block of West 5th Street in North Vancouver. + The thief entered the victim’s apartment and pried open the door to a locker room located in the basement of the apartment, The suspect took equipment including an Oceaner dry suit. Cross, ‘‘B’’ Watch at 985-1311. an jailed for driving violation A 21-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was sentenced to 16 days in jail and fined $600 after he was found guilty on two counts of driving while his driver's licence was suspended. Spencer Doyly Rochfort was originally charged with two counts of driving without a licence in connection with incidents in December and January in which he drove a vehicle on North Van- couver streets. He was also charged with one count of driving without insurance in connection with a Jan. 10 incident in which a Volkswagen Beetle was pulled over by police on the Dollarton Highway. Appearing before Judge J.K. Shaw, Rochfort was found guilty on both charges of driving while his licence was suspended and was sentenced to jail terms of seven and nine days and fined $300 on each count. The Crown entered a stay of proceedings in the charge of deiving without insurance.
