Phe society's executive director, Adlene Gladstone, said everyone at the organization was so moved by the dedication of these two volun teers that the organization decided to create this award, Ida Paddock is best known as the chairperson of the North Van- couver Christmas Bureau in 1985 and 1986. She is also helping on the 1987-88 campaign. “Ida’s inventiveness and energy produced a significant increase in volunteer hours and level of dona- tions received by the Christmas bureau. It's help from people like Ida and the hundreds of in- dividuals and businesses, including the North Shore News, that has made the. campaign such a suc- cess,"' said Gladstone. The Christmas Bureau collects food, toys and rnoney for food which are all distributed to needy families. {t's fitting that Paddock, who was born and raised in North Vancouver, remembers the first Christmas bureau back in the '30s. She was a young girl during the depression when the bureau operated out of an empty store on Lonsdale near 11th. ‘‘Dad used to ask us for some of our toys to give away to kids who didn't have any and the firemen would repair ail of the broken -ones,’’ Paddock remembers. Doreen Ramage, the other reci-. pient of the inaugural Friend of the Family Award, is a former member of the board of the NSFSS and is a West Vancouver nother of two young adults. Ramage is honored, said Gladstone, for her, ‘tmarvellous combination of dedication and creativity in putting together our Fast and Fantastic cookbook. It's our first major fund-raising project and enabled the society to. fund a specialist counsellor in the treat- ment of victims of sexual abuse."’ Fast and Fantastic is a profes- sional publication containing reci- pes from > local cocks and ‘put’ together entirely by volunteers. Ramage was head of the volunteers and dedicated an entire year to buying food, testing and tasting recipes. Ramage also attended two courses to learn how to publish a cookbook and to write for the food industry. Said Ramage: ‘‘It was a great experience. | had always wanted to publish a cookbook and [| made some good friends, in particular, fellow hard-working committee members, Gail Marus, Beth McAdams and Nancy Thordar- son.” Friends is the whole idea behind the Friends of the Family Award and its donor, the North Shore Family Services Society. As Ida Paddock says, ‘The society is to the community what a favorite auntie or uncle is ‘to an individual. family —- there when “you need them — just. ‘like a * friend.”” CHRISTINE Has her own place!
