Renovation queries explained

Q. 1 AM planning a renovation.
What should I do before I hire the
coniractor?

A. First, make a list of your ex-
pectations. Prepare a collection of
photos or pictures. Research the
bylaws in your own community for
what you can and cannot do.

Q. How do I find a contractor for
a renovation?

A. Check with friends and local
building associations to get names
and references. Get estimates from
at least three contractors. Check
how long. they have been in
business and get their business
licence number.

Q. i may need to borrow funds to

complete the work. Are there
special renovation loans?

A. Yes. Have all the details of
the renovation ready for the credit
officer. Discuss possibilities of a
renovation or consumer loan or a
mortgage, depending on your situ-
ation and the renovation. .

Q. Beside the renovation itself, are
there things I must do?

A. Look for other improvements
you can make more easily and
cheaply while the rock area is ex-
posed. For example, if you are
putting up new drywall, you can
add insulation in the wall, new
copper piping and possibly
upgrade the wiring.
