ARRINGTON ‘s Reporter Twenty-year-old Werstiuk, who qualified for the event Sept. 19 at the Canadian national champion- _ships, is the only competitor from Western Canada and will pit her muscles against women from all over the world in the Nov. 20-23 event. “She’s a natural body-builder,”’ explains manager and boyfriend Wayne Scott. ‘‘She just has the perfect genetic and symmetrical look for a body-builder.”’ And Werstiuk’s body-building look has won her high piacings in competitions since she started in the sport 20 months ago. The North Vancouver fitness instructor took top honors in recent Miss Okanagan and Miss Northern B.C. “events. In next month's championships she can expect tough competition from the international crowd. With the world’s top under-2! competitors present Werstiuk ad- mits her chances of winning are slim. “But I hope to place in the top seven,’’ she says confidently. “I’ve heard (that) a lot of the German girls are on steriods so I'll look a lot smaller and theyll be that much bigger,’’ explains Werstiuk, a former North Shore News Sunshine Girl. While she does not use steroids or any other performance-boosting drug, amino acid tablets are used to supplement her body-builder’s strict diet. ‘‘They give you energy — lots of energy.” Until the third week in October, Werstiuk will try to gain as much weight as possible while at the same time building up her muscles. Putting on weight then taking it off gives her a chance to gradually reach her optimum, rather that struggling at the almost impossible task of maintaining her competi- tion weight until the champion- ships. Next month’s championship is divided into two events: the com- pulsory posing and free posing. The free posing is the tough one. “When you’re up there it’s hard,’’ says Werstiuk. ‘‘The 90 se- conds you're given seem like an hour and a half. She trains for about two hours a day, working with both free and fixed weights. After the weights she hops on an exercise bike for a quick ride. A month before the champion- ships she will start aerobics. On the day prior to the competi- tion she will not drink anything.
