HALL AND MARCING WANT TO WORK Summer break for City council y MAUREEN CURTI TIME OFF during the summer for North Van- couver City council members will return again in July despite a bid to keep their noses to the grindstone. Although council! has traditionatly cut back its July and August meetings from four to two per month, Aldermen Ralph Hall and Frank Marcino staged an unsuccessful attempt) Mon- day to end the practice. In past years council members used to take most of their hohdays during the two summer months. But noting this is no longer the case (Mayor Jack Loucks 1s currently vacationing in Scotland), Marcino felt the Jess frequent meetings were unjustified. He was also wormed that the practice could = delay some of the big develop- ments that are coming up. “It should be business as West Van breakins AN ARREST was made in one break and enter incident in West Vancouver during the last week, but thieves sull managed to make off with items in three out of seven reported occurrences. We've got to meet every week of the year.”’ The proposal brought a humorous protest from City Administrator Ed Raymond. “This os the only perk council gives me that I! would hke to hang on to,”’ he said, explaining also that City staff holidays were scheduled around the less frequent council meetings in the summer. He was backed by Alderman Stella Jo Dean. ‘We did this in the fifties, sixties and seventies, and it has worked out well,’’ she declared. Alderman Dana_ Taylor agreed, adding that council is still able to meet during the summer when called upon to attend to business in hand. Acting Mayor John Braithwaite sided with Dean and Taylor, saying he still prefers to take his holidays in the summer. So summer meetings of council have now. been scheduled as follows: June 18, June 25, July 9, July 23, August 7 and August 20. Regular weekly meetings on Monday will resume in September.
