Mo, at POR ahi A 5 mATcHES Zz Students — significantly more than last year — warn of another tough summer for young people seeking work. With 25% unemployment among the 15-25 age group, a good many will be disap- pointed again, despite the majority of over-17s this year who are apparently ready to settle for the minimum $3.65 hourly wage in return for a steady pay cheque. Even that is unlikely to produce enough full-time jobs. Preoccupation with ‘‘a steady pay cheque’’ provided by someone else is, of course, part of the problem. Meanwhile, there are reportedly few takers so far for the new Student Venture Loan Program which provides financing up to $2,000 for students who create their own summer job enterprises. Aside from that, our own Classified Ads department has found in past years that there are plenty of short-term jobs -- painting, landscaping, yard work, simple household repairs and the like -- awaiting students willing to branch out on their own as individual entrepreneurs. In numerous cases an inexpensive ‘‘handyman’’ ad has brought regular employment throughout the summer, often at more than the minimum hourly rate. Self-help gives students an independent solution to their summer income needs and a valuable taste of running their own **business’’. For those with energy and ini- tiative it can be a much more satisfying answer than the overcrowded employment centre. Brain--or heart? ove over, Michael Walker and the Fraser Institute — the solution to all our problems should surely come at this week’s Vancouver convention of the Men- sa Society, which will discuss ‘‘where B.C. ought to be in 10 years and how to get there."’ Mensa members, after all, have to score in the top 2% of the 1Q scale and there are only 55,000 worldwide. But then, what if the final answer lies not in the brain but in the heart”?
