GE mailbox cen! Dear Editor: I could not let the recent letter by Alderman Ernie Crist gq unchallenged. It is quite obvious that he believes the state can take care of everytming. With reference to the Lower Mainland garbage problem, he provided incredible solutions thaj involved even larger, cold-hearted bureaucracies that would be twice as inefficient as the ones now provided. . His type of thinking has whole complex but, you can line up and wait if you like. His type of thinking demands that society be responsible for a handful of “winos” in Vancouver's slum area, who drink Lysol. It’s not the “wino’s” fault, it’s the manufacturers fault and the fault of the little store keeper who sells it. I loved his cute line, “If Victoria can pay for a sports complex for private clubs". 1 imagine he is referring to the new domed stadium. He should not knock it ... his next political rally might be held there. And notice his wording that Victoria should be asked to enact legislation to force (nothing like govern- ment strength) manufac- Uareps (the enemy), to buy back at “market prices material ‘such” as glass. paper, plastics, and- metal. Can you imagine the cost of gathering up all this material hé speaks of each week, and lurning it into your neigh- borhood store? It would take huge arenas just to handle the storage of these_ materials, not to mention the cost of each item rising in price. Of course, the manufacturers are rich capitalist pigs who can afford it. He does not mention the total in- convenience to the average householder who would now be responsible for a logistical nightmare of A7 - Sunday, January 2, 1983 - North Shore News cleaning and sorting all this expended material, and the high costs of hauling it back to the store each week. . Quoting Crist, “Such steps could reduce operational costs significantly.” Where did he take his economics schooling, in Bulgaria? I've always admired the use of simple and appealing solutions by the likes of Crist. He appeals to our logic by passing on all our problems to manufacturers and producers and having a government watchdog patrol everything. The danger with this kind of thinking is that it eventually extends to your home where finally, your very life is controlled by a block commissar. No, Mr. Crist, the only garbage problem we have ts a heap of foreign philosophy that requires immediate incineration. Robert G. It takes a man of some strength of character to admit that he was wrong on such an 1m- . portant issue. [| refer of course to your column “On Rethinking the Bomb".
