A7 - Wednesday, September 22, 1982 - North Shore News PS mailbox ee McCarthyism i is alive in North Van Dear Editor: I would like to register my strong objection to the article in the North Shore News of August 19 and an editorial in the same paper a week later in which the “red” label is pinned on the North Vancouver Voters’ Association. To me, this is not only a clear case of misrepresentation; it is an abuse of your ownership of the press, and remininiscent of an earher and ugly period in our post-war history known as McCarthyism, when all reform movements were labelled Communist and Moscow inspired. NOVVA is a non-partisan community reform organization. Its program is Neither socialist nor revolutionary, radical or left-wing. It has worked out and continues to work out a position on the main issues facing our municipality — issues such as_ taxation, community planning, waste disposal. It has no partisan political ideology; it is dedicated to reform at the municipal level. If NOVVA should decide to sponsor candidates in the November municipal elections, isn’t that exactly what it should do — work out a program so that all voters know exactly where it stands and can then judge it accordingly? In your editorial you call on aldermen to make “objective and pragmatic individual judgements of each issue on its merits.” | couldn’! agree more. But when I do and when NOVVA does, why then do you pin ideological labels on us? It seems to me that the position taken by your paper is anything but non-partisan. You have selected the candidates you support and labelled them “middle-of- the-road", without defining what that means. Then you label all others as either left- wing or right-wing. Instead of pinning labels ‘Dirty tricks’ Dear Editor: The Socred government's rush to push_ electoral gcrrymandering through the House ‘extends their “Dirty Tricks” to a new high. The Electoral Reform Com- mission report was released on Tuesday, the House was recalled on Fmnday = and redistribution is before the House on Monday. At a time of | fiscal restraint, the Socred government seems to ignore the fact that adding 7 seats to the Legislature will cost B.C. taxpayers about $600,000 each year. There isn't enough money for health care, dental plans = or education but they can find the money to pay for 7 extra M.L.A.’s, especially when they expect to win 6 of them. Once again the govern- ment is using Our money in an effort to ensure their own re-election. Gordon Dunnet North Vancouver Pro-Life motions properly brought Dear Editor Lions Gate Hospital board member Don Burbidge’s description = of pro-life motions passed al the annual meeting against LGH abortion committecs as “parhamentary skulduggery” is scurmious and tl-founded (N.S. North Shore Pro Life Ne Sua9uNa—SHaOuNE—Suq9uNA—SesA9NNg on people and groups, why don’t you practice what you preach and judge them and let the voters judge them by what they do on issues? It seems you would like to have voters dismiss everything NOVVA does or advocates as left-wing without considering the merits of the stand it takes. Please do us all the courtesy of reporting the facts without putting political labels on them and let the voters make up their own minds. “Red baiting” is a poor substitute for good reporting. Ernie Crist, Alderman. Chris Lloyd replies: The articles referred to were intended to inform the voting public of the poliucal leanings of two groups unwilling to do so them- selves, not just the left-wing NoVVA_ but also its an- tithesis, the Taxpayers’ Association for Good Lloyd unmasks extremists Dear Editor: Instead of clarifying issues, Don Burbidge, president of NOVVA, has clouded them further with his letter in your September 15th issue of the North Shore News. Mr. Burbidge boasts of his party's moderate policies and then admits he has no control over his candidates once they are elected. He condemns your newspaper for attempting to “root out reds and fascists” but apparently takes no imterest in ensuring that candidates he endorses do not belong to totalitarian parties of the far left or the far night. In view of the endorsing by Mr. Burbidge of at least Government (TAGG). My question concerning these groups ts whether the ob- jective of their efforts to divide North Vancouver District with party politics is to benefit the community at large — or minority political parties out for individual gain. -and costly NEVER AGAIN WILL YOU SEE WALLPAPER PRICES LIKE THIS.UP TO 70% OFF + 40,000 singte rolls ot Mizcontinved wallpaper pi ed fom > volo sO PB: Inates upto JO off All first lee goods NO SeCONns OF lereqgularns serlere Teer vaariers Peqver stove tee Store massive Ciaplays al! wWaltpape: 16 prepasiod: on Papem winyin ott 2 Hundreds of otha private label wallpaper rolla Hogular vi to $4 0S um $5.99... 3 Setectod Walipape: Books 30% OFF 1 § ptece Roller Ai Aulenens Weg BA ttt ea 1 BO.II wo 2 Onentot Pure Oriatio Brushos A 1 $199 aa aie A + 63 8D on SALE EFT EC TIVE FRM SEPT tom Th OCT tom Oem A ttete Cloverdale’s BIG FALL Cloverdale PAINT N’ PAPER two previous provincial Communist Party candidates in last year’s municipal elections, the electors of North Vancouver should be grateful to the North Shore News for any efforts it makes to unmask extremists.
