ALFORD's Grade 7 mathemati- cians at St. Michaels University School in Victoria excelled in the recent Gauss Maths Contest, run by the University of Waterloo. ® His top Grade 7 team of five pupils stood first by fifty points in Greater Victoria out of twenty-three public and Independent schools. @ His pupils captured five of the top six places in the city-wide contest and one third of the forty- two places on Greater Victoria’s Grade 7 Honour Roll. - @ His team’s score of 465 out of 500 ranked it ahead of all Grade 8 teams from other city schools and placed it third in Victoria behind SMU's own first and second- ranking Grade 8 teams. (The latter both included a number of competitors who last year were Mr. Alford’s Crade 7 pupils.) @ SMU's Grade 7 team was very likely top also in Canada. (One cannot be certain becasue Gauss results are published only by region.) @ Mr. Alford’s winning team consisted of Michael Roberts, son of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Roberts; Jullan Anderson, sn of Mrs. Laura Anderson; Kenneth Dobell, son of Prof. and Mra. Rodney Dobell; Fenton Eng, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Eng; and David Kayall, son-of Mr. and Mrs. Sa'ad Kayal, all of Victoria. @ Michael Roberts, from Mr. Alford’s Grade 6 maths class, who wrote the Grade 7 contest for fun, stood ahead of all Grade 7 pupils in Greater Victoria and equal with the best from Grade B. He scored 100%. For information, write: John Schaffter, Headmaster St. Michaels University School 3400 Richmond Road VICTORIA, B.C. VaeP 4P5 Phone: (604) 692-2411 M.A. (Cantab)
