B2 - Wednesday, August 4, 1982 - North Shore News SE Spor t a . . . * ° ; GOOD GRIEF! The Hollyburn Hollyhawks Jiiniors won a gold medal in hockey last weekend and they didn’t even need a blanket to do it! The men’s over-40 team based at West Vancouver's Hollyburn Country Club earned their medal in Linus Division play at the Snoopy Senior World Hockey Championships. It all makes more sense : when you realize the Santa : Rosa tournament is the . brainchild of Charlie Brown creator Charles Schultz and is played at the rink he built in his home town. Forty teams travelled to California for the senior event, including groups from Finland and Japan. The tournament divided the mixed-age teams into divisions of four each, named after a Charlie Brown character. The Hollyhawks defeated the North Shore Winter Club Old Goats 3-1, Santa Monica Sharks 90 and Calgary Springbanks 9-1 to earn the gold. It was the first time out of four entries the team had earned the gold. Leading this year’s edition of the junior squad was captain Ray Wong and assistant John Roberts. The Hollyhawks Seniors, the over-50 team, finished their division with the bronze medal. A 5-2 loss to. the Hollywood Stars and another 5-1 one to the San Francisco 49’ers didn't stop the local men from posting at least one win, a 43 squeaker over Victoria. So well, in fact, that when the complicated handicap used to equalize the many cars racing was worked through, the North Van- couver driver was awarded the bronze medal at the end of the colorful race. Knoll was narrowly beaten by two others who managed to catch up on the last lap, but was consoled by the second place finish his five- car team managed in the relay race. The race featured a huge entourage of vintage sports and racing cars, almost half of which California. A 1947 Talbot Lago Grand Prix was one of the featured attractions as was an authentic Porsche 906 and an Alfa Romeo T33 sports racer. Also present were many fine examples of Jaguars, Lotus’ and other British cars as well as many American high performance cars. Among these was an A.C. Travelling across Europe and financing himself with his unique skills, Damilano settled for a time in Senegal. There he _ first saw sailboarding and took it up Since there were few mountains to climb, and with no coaching whatsoever he began the sport which would soon dominate his life. It was sailboarding which brought Damilano to West Vancouver more than four years ago, and when he is not working as the manager at the Cafe des Alpes he is out there, crossing the harbour, no matter what the weather. “I’m not athletic,” Damilano says. ‘‘Wind- surfing is mostly tactic and technique in racing. “It's not like running or cycling — you have to read the wind, play the sheets to become a winner.” Damilano races two kinds of sailboards — open class boards designed by French manufacturer Crit and Windsurfer boards used in one-design events. A sure sign of a sail- boarder’s status is corporate sponsorship, and Crit has provided Damilano with two boards to test and use. And he does use them, to good advantage. Damilano’s most recent win came at the end of June in the Pacific Northwest open, when he beat out competitors from B.C. to Texas. A dozen testifying to decorate the restaurant. Damilano’s win in District 11 one-design allows him to travel to Sardinia at the end of September for the World -Championships. A few more wins in the open class and he can enter that event too. He has also qualified for the North American championshps in San Diego this month, and will compete trophies other wins The Pro 929-2611 the. GOLF? In the meantime, daily trips from Jericho to Lighthouse Park and back via Bowen Island will keep Damilano ready for the upcoming, and hopefully successful, challenges for the world title.
