There is no- -question that the Vancouver Whitecaps have one -of ..the~ top organizations-kin“the North American Soccer League’ - when it comes fo. «the-. development of so-called - ‘native’. players. Try and think of any club which has produced so many home grown players who have been able to make it on - a regular basis inté the league, and you will come up with a short list. Have a look. at the Whitecaps, and around the league at young players from: the Vancouver operation who have made it. There’s Dale Mitchell of Portland, a reguiar who also holds down .one of the key roles with the Canadian Natgional team. Then there is Drew Ferguson, a mid- fielder with Edmonton, another former Whitecaps, while over in Washington is David McGill to name but a few. | With the 1982 season demanding that four starting spots on each team be filled with mon-imports, the demand for strong development at the local level has never been higher. While other clubs struggle to establish locals and yet others restrict themselves to scouting - mainly in the Vancouver area -_ the Whitecaps director of player development Les Wilson, has created reserve team system that is the envy of the NASL. The envy: of ‘the league Over the recently com- - pleted season take a look at . the number of young north — cans who have made ::° their mark’on theclub. Ofcourse, there are, the thrée regular starters. Bob Lenarduzzi, Paul Nelson and Gerry Gray. But in addition there are a score of others, all who saw action this season. Buzz Parsons, who could easily be called Mr. Reliable; Carl Shearer-whom many had given © “Mp on. ° following a serious.“groin _ injury the season “before; David Norman, Brent.
