(Ellsworth Dickson photo) RCMP_ARREST DRIVER Cyclist hurt Zs in movies North Vancouver District council members have been invited to come to 1521 Hunter Street and see for themselves what ex- propriation of part of the property for a new fire hall is going to look like. The invitation was ex- tended by Lark Noble who appeared as a delegation before council Monday on behalf of .herself and her brother and __ sister-in-law who own the property. The new fire hall is planned for the site of the existing Number 2 station but expropriation of some of the Noble’s property which hes behind the station is also required. “It’s going to look awful,” she said. “People driving by are going to say, “Who planned this?” Most of their backyard will be lost. “For us, no backyard means no garage, no vegetable garden, no lawn, no patio, no clothesline, no fruit trees,” she said. But Noble said the family’s feelings go “much deeper and further back.” Three generations of Nobles have lived in the house their grandfather built and Lark Noble spoke of _ the emotional ties the family still feels for the house and its garden. She also criticized council for the “sneaking, un- derhanded way” in which the expropriation bylaw was passed. “We learned about this Jewels by Christensen GOLD JEWELLERY & WATCH REPAIR Custom Design with Diamonds & Genuine A5-Sunday News, October 26, 1980. bylaw more than two weeks after the fact,” she said. “It’s pretty scary when you don't even have the ‘say’ or control over what happens to land you live on and rightfully own.” Noble said the council has had “this business on its books” for eight years. “It seems the council has not had the correct business foresight to make a deal when the time was right.” She accused council of being reluctant to pay the price of commercially zoned land and instead, “to ex- propriate a_ residential property which is worth one- third the cost of commercial property. But she suggested the action did not “reflect the will of the electorate.” She presented a petition signed by 27 area residents sup- porting her protest. Noble listed several op- tions she felt were still open to council, including pur- ‘Don’t take our home’ — the Noble cry chasing land “from people who want to sell” and a new design for the fire hall which would not require additional land. She also listed five alternate sites she thought might be available. But, she said, “If you absolutely cannot find another site, we would wish you to buy our whole place rather than cripple its worth and desecrate our memories.” At the end of her presentation, Mayor Don . Bell pointed out that the District has been prepared to buy the entire site for the past four years — at “fair market value.” But the Nobles’ and the District’s ideas of “fair market value” differ con- siderably and the two parties have failed to reach an agreement on price. Council agreed to con- sider the matter further in camera and to report back within two weeks. My na design. draperies by S.
