George N. Pierce was an

unlikely candidate for

automotive immortality. He

was a manvfacturer of
bicycles. and bird cages but,
in 1901, he decided to
produce a car. The Piérce
Motorette was powered by a
2-3/4 kp. European import,
the de Dion engine. Pierce
sold 2S such machines, and
expanded his operations.

Arrow, a 2eyfinder 15 hp

a major race or rally was the
finest publicity available,
and sales prospered ac-

cordingly. By
Arrow
boasted 60 hp at 1,000 rpm.
This was. the last year. the
word ‘great’ was retained.

The Pierce-Arrow of 1909
was heralded as one of the
finest luxury. cars available.
Prices ranged from $5,900 to
$7,200, but demand usually
