Tan ewe eer B2 - Friday, May 11, 1984 - North Shore News HOPING TO MAKE IT TO MAUI Women’s sal IN SPITE of rigorous, inten- sive training by the team in practices, drills, and local races, the first all-women’s sailboat racing crew to enter the Victoria-Maui _ Interna- tional Yacht Race in June may be in jeopardy unless it gets additional financial support. ‘*To day, $26,000 has been raised, mainly from the crew and frends,’’ states Lorna Kirkham, President of the Canadian Women’s Sailboat Racing Association. ‘‘An ad- ditiona! $39,000 must be rais- ed to meet the charter com- mitment,’’ Kirkham states. The Association is chartering a 50-foot Santa Cruz sloop, Emily Carr, owned by Lani Spund of Los Angeles. The crew of Emily has earned an enviable reputation as a strong contender in_ local races. Supporters feel it will be unfortunate if the project cannot proceed as planned. The dilemma being faced by the CWSRA comes on the heels of the announcement tha the West’s first all-female crew has been accepted by the Victoria~-Mau! International Yacht Race Committee for the 2,300 mile race to Lahina, Maul, Hawaii, this summer. The sloop, Emily Carr, moored at Bridges Restaurant on Granville Island in Vancouver has at- tracied many supporters and onlookers as the team works industriously to prepare the boat for the race. An Olympian NORWESTERS TRACK and Field €lub is offering a good deal on the Olympics this summer. From now until June 1, Club athletes will be selling B.C. Athletics lottery tickets. Top prize in the lot- tery 1S a complete Los Angeles Olympics package tour for two people, in- cluding return air fare, hotel accommodation and tickets to track and field events. Hotel ac- commodation ‘‘in the Los Angeles area’’ is on offer at between $170 and $180 per night. Purchasing event tickets seems to be a lottery of its own. Agents are not able to say which ones might be available, and’ event loca- tions are scattered over a wide area. B.C. Athletics Lottery tickets will be sold house to house on the North Shore un. til June 1. Proceeds from sale of the one dollar Uckets will ROYAL RESERVE go to purchase track and field equipment for Norwesters Many volunteers have donated hours of work on the project to date. The search for financial support has focused mainly on individual and potential corporate funders. In spite of the generosity of the people who have given help so far it iS not enough to cover the charter costs. The CWSRA is a non- profit society under the Societies Act without benefit of a tax number for income lax purposes.
