Redekopp said Alex was arrested on March 24, 1999, when he was allegedly trying to sell the salmon. Redekopp said the alleged sale was to a Lower Mainland distributor and wholesaler. The salmon would then likely have been sold in Canada. According to search warrant information, the sockeye salmon was caught by gill-net during an carly run in the Fraser River near Chilliwack. There was no commercial fishery in the area at the time.
