B4 - Wedmesday, September 15, 1982 - North Shore News NEW STUDIO OPENS IN N.VAN West Van Theatre School starts over West Vancouver Theatre School Association will re- open its theatre school in the fall after several years ab- sence. Ongoing classes began on Saturday, Sep- tember 11 in St. Stephen's Anglican Church, 885-22nd, West Vancouver. Scheduled are classes in drama, puppetry, make-up and speech for ages four to fourteen. A costume making class will also be given for teenagers and adults. A special monthly production is also being planned. Negotiations are also under way for a Canadian production directed by June Lawson of Toronto. Heather Roberts started the Theatre School Association in West Van- couver in the 1970's with classes in Dundarave and at St. Stephen's. She has been encouraged to re-open the Theatre School because, Theatre is coming into its own on the North Shore. “Higher drama standards in the public schools has stimulated interest in the theatre.” Roberts reeceived her training in acting, directing and costume design in England. She has also directed chancel dramas at Canadian Memorial Church. Currently Roberts is rehearsing the role of Jennet in Christopher Fry’s “The Lady's not for Burning’ and is directing “Androcles and the Lion.” She is also writing a book on _ Religious Costumes. Several other theatre professionals will join her in the Theatre School. They are Dava Dasi who has taught puppetry for 18 years, Cecelia Pereira-Smith who has had extensive acting and teaching experience, and Duke de Quoy who has taught puppetry to children and adults. Classes commence on Saturday 18th September at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 220 West 8th Street, North Vancouver, in the lounge area on the lower level . (entrance on. street . level West 8th). The themes to be explored this fall will be the River Bank, the Open Road and the Adventures of Toad m Wind in the Willows: Beauty and the Beast, and two of the tales of Hans Christian Anderson: The Swincherd and The Little Mermaid. There will be opportunities for dance and puppetry. AHL members of the theatre school classes will meet together for a monthly ‘Showcase’ of puppetry. dance and drama. Parents are invited to share in these times, and are encouraged to get involved in the production side of the theatre program.
