3 - Wednesday, November 2, 1988 - Capilano Chronicle Residents discuss the community plan The following column is submitted menthly by District. Mayor Marilyn Baker. COMMUNITY PLANNING — YOUR COMMENTS Two recent open houses held in the District of North Vancouver saw hundreds of residents come out to discuss the draft Official Community Plan. The plan is to serve as a broad : vision for the future, an easily understood guide for all who live here or conduct business here, a master land use policy for the municipality for the next two de- cades and a principal reference for all future land use decisions to be made by council. \ The comments we received from you who attended the open houses were thoughtful, varied and valuable. © On our natural setting: ‘One of the major concerns’! have reduces ‘DEAR ED) to a basic aesthetic sensibility. I think the dramatic beauty of the North Shore niountain peaks is the quintessential beauty mark of Vancouver and I desperately fear that the ever-encroaching neighborhood developments climb- ing up its sides are threatening to shrink this great asset into in- significance!”’ © On parkland: ‘‘It’s a great plan. I think the creation of parkland you have set aside will make North Vancouver a very attractive place to live. I realize the municipality makes money from selling land but <1, for one, am willing to pay more tax to preserve the parkland you have planned to create."* © On housing: ‘Stop those hideous. 2 looking houses taking up most of the lots and leaving hardly any room for trees and shrubs.’”” and “1 understand homeowners in our area have been approached with a proposal to buy their single family houses in order to tear them down aot Youth supervision Dear Editor: I wish to comment on a State- ment made in the Capilano Chronicle article Skateboard Van- dalism Raises Fear, Oct. 5, 1988, that concerned the Friday night drop-in for youth program at the William Griffin Recreation Centre. To clarify the suggestion that these youths ‘‘are not supervised,” 1 wish to inform the public that a well-qualified youth worker is employed by Capilano Community Services Svuciety to operate and supervise. the ‘‘drop-in'? on Wed- nesday and Thursday from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday nights 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. un In addition,’ there are 12 to 14 trained volunteers who assist the LON a y; as where we live and work, where we care for and share with one another. Where'we meet to discuss common concerns, en- courage each other to participate in deci- B sion making and. act. together in co- ~ operation. In community we find security, friendship and prosperity. Together we “Gan create such a place on Sat., Nov. 19, 1988. VOTE FOR COMMUNITY ELECT pattas COLLIS for Alderman, North Vancouver District is ee a eae ee Baker and build a condominium project. I am against rezoning this area as clarified youth worker in the program. The Capilano Youth Project addresses a need in the community by providing social and recre- ational activities for youth, an outreach and counselling service and educational programs. The plan is in the draft stage. The final bylaw and its detailed wording are under review by coun- cil and should be presented shori- ly. Then the formal public hearing process begins. Any questions or comments you have can be directed to our planning depart- ment at 987-7131... - COMING AGAIN SOON An alternate proposal for rezon- ing to allow the Mountain’s Edge Development at Bluebonnet and Edgemont was presented Oct. 6 at / a public information meeting in / the community. . The down-scaled proposal for 18 units came under close scrutiny by area residents and will be consid- ered by council on the Nov. 7 agenda. FOR THE ACTION ORIENTED Would you like to be part of the decision-making process in a more direct way? Why not volunteer to serve on one of the district’s many boards or committees? We have citizens addressing planning and design issues, animal welfare, culture, recreation and libraries, family court and (most recently approved) a task force on recycling. If you are interested in finding out more, give me a call or drop a note outlining in what area you might like to serve. i i ADJOURMENT 1 arise in the morning torn be- tween a desire to improve/save the world and a desire to enjoy/savor it; This sure makes it hard to plan the day! { + Create a sfieciul gift + © Choose fram designs from ona workshap © Quaility work at reasonable prices « * Shop early for Christmas © Cres m orders clase December 10, [988 * LATELIER GOLDSMITHS Chris Hemeon + 110 Wese bth St. North Van.
