By Jolanda Waskito Contributing Writer NORTH Vancouver City resident Brian Dorward has been liv- ing in and illegally renting out six self- contained suites in his home at 745 Grand Blvd. for eight years. On Feb. 3, 1997 citv council voted to remove the illegal suites. On July 23, city council rejected Dorward’s applica: tion tu rezone his multi-fami- ly home in a. single-family neighborhood. On Monday night, Dorward came before council and appealed to them to pre- serve the “integrity” of the house by allowing him to rezone his property or desig- nate the home a heritage building. Council heard his plea and voted 4-3 for staff to talk to Dorward about reducing the number of units and the pos- sibility of a heritage designa- tion, which would allow him to have four or five unt.s. Staff would then . cport back to council on what + discussed or negotiated. Councillors Barbara Perrault, Barbara Sharp and Stella Jo Dean. opposed the motion. A previous motion to direct’ staff to find out whether a heritage designa- tion with up to three units in the home was feasible was struck down by a vote of 4-3. Opposed to the motion were councillors John Braithwaite, Bob Fearnley, and Darrell Mussatto and Mayor Jack Loucks. In his presentation to council, Dorward said oniv two complaints were filed against him. Both were abour the leguliry of the six suites he rents out.
