PANACHE PRESENTS a ereat performance Vancouver Museum’s Panache: 200 Years of Fashionable Women is a very in- teresting exhibit that journals the changes in women’s lifestyle. Though the show began in November 1990 and continues un- til che end of August, is should be marked on your calendar now so as not to let it slip by unnoticed. The show begins in the Rococo period of the mid 1700s, and the Regency and Neo-Gothiec fashions of the 183Gs-§840s which includes Sixties fashions are back in style THE PHRASE ‘everything old is new again’’ certainly applics to this season’s fashion shows. ‘Sixties styles were prominent on the runways and ‘SOs-style fashions popped up at a tew shows as well, You may curse the day you gave away those ‘‘outdated”’ clothes to the thrift shop because now they are in the forefront of fashion. Everything "60s is in stvle: miniskirts, thick headbands, bell- bottoms, midriffs and even pat- chwork. Short, simple, A-line dresses are everywhere for spring. But if you did give away your ‘60s garb, don’t fret. The ‘90s inter- pretation of “60s fashion is just as zany and eye-catching. Some designers, like Norma Kamali, concentrated sclely on the "60s theme. She didn’t leave out one fringe and even the bottoms of her sleeves were shaped like bells. Rebecca Moses used a more conservative, less wacky approach when designing her collection for spring °91, Although some of her coHection was reminiscent of the *60s (midriffs and minidresses). she did not forget that today’s woman needs versatility aad prac- ticality in her wardrobe. An interesting biend of elements from both the ‘30s and ‘60s were incorporated in many designers’ collections. Both Carolina Herrera’ and Isaac Mizrahi used styles and ac- cessories from the “50s and ‘60s hemlines to create a more conser- vative ininidress, This spring, Betsey Johnsca may have introduced her most conservative collection ever. In. fluenced by the “SOs and early 6s, she brought back pillbox hats, frilly feminine dresses and kerchiefs. Bui anyvene who knows Betsey Johnson's work knows she is far from conservative. The rest of het collection consisted of mod “60s looks, and other outfits thar can only be described as typical Betsey Johnson outlandishness. Although “50s and "60s styles were prominent this spring, me designers concentrated on w they do best: Bob Mackie was sull the most outrageous and fishy designer, Oscar de la Renta the most elegant, Ralph Lauren the most classic, and Geoffrey Beene the most exciting. the gown Queen Mary wore for the Silver Jubilee. This is followed by the hoop skirts of the mid 19th century and includes the walking costume, which revealed the ankles with a slightly shorter skirt, and represented the first time that women were accepted into recre- ational sport. Busties from the late 1800s follow the hoops as well as the bicycling costume which introduc- ed trousers tc womenswear. Early 20th century costumes illustrate La Belle Epoque. For the mid- 20th century, designers Coco Chanel, Balenciaga, Charles Worth, Givenchy, Hardy Amies, Schiaparelli, Christian Dior and Oscar de la Renta. Special recog- nition is given to Vancouver de- signers in the late 20th century category including Zonda Nellis, Catherine Regehr and Dorothy Grant. ff vou have not yet visited the presentation, it is worth seeing the upcoming fashion shows at Pacific Centre Atrium on April Ji, i and 13.
