Recycling innovation

Program aims to include condos

FOR environmentally
conscious apartment
dwellers, recycling has
long been a source of
inconvenience and
frustration.

Now a Port Coquitlam
man says he has a solution,
and he'd like to put it to work
on the North Shore.

Terry Biggar of Biggar
Enterprises Ltd. recently

became the sole distributor of
the — parented —_—-Hi- Rise
Recycling System, already in
use in some American cities
and in Toronto.

The system uses garbage
chutes to allow residents to
recycle newspapers, cans,
plastic and glass. A push of
the button indicates which
material is being disposed of
and the appropriate bin rolls
into place beneath the chute.

According to Biggar, the
system will encourage high-
rise dwellers to take parr in

community recycling pro-
grams.

“Just as the Blue Box
reminds people to think
before throwing out their
waste, the Hi-Rise Recycling
System requires people to
make a choice... this serves as
a constant reminder that it’s
not just garbage anymore.”

Biggar said the recycling
system is best installed in new
buildings. He currently has
calculated some quotes for
highrises still at the architec-
tural level.

Community cleanup all set

NORTH Van residents
can clean up their act
by entering the Clean
& Green Challenge.

North Shere Tourism,
together with Grouse
Mountain and the North
Vancouver Chamber of
Commerce (NVCC), will host
the second annual community
cleanup on Saturday, May 10.

Organizers invite the pub-
lic to help enhance North
Van’s scenic beauty and com-
munity pride this summer by
cleaning up a stretch of
road.Last year more than 100
people volunteered their time
and later enjoyed a barbecue
on Grouse Mountain.This
year, organizers are hoping for
‘an even bigger turnout.
