Doug delivers discouraging words Students strike out Dear Editor; I think it is important to pur the recent strike of CUPE | members in its political context. The negotiations between the North Vancouver School Board and CUPE had been concluded, agreed to by both sides, and considered affordable by the board. Both the board and CUPE believed they had 2 deal. The British Columbia Public Sector Employers Associstion, who had a representative at the negotiations and had the chance to suggest the deal “roo rich” during those negotiations, later rejected it. This body is responsible to the B.C. gov- emment. The money saved on salaries during the one day strike (my conservative guess is $300,000) docs not go into the coffers of the board but back to the provincial government. The board and CUPE were $15,000 apart (that’s less than $1 per student). It seems to me that the governinent has made a profit of more than $285,000 at the expense of | the students of North Vancouvez. Dear Editor: I look at our world some- times and [ get discouraged with a lot of the ignorant ways people view the current struggles to make our world more equitable for everyone. The Jan. 26 Doug Collins column, in which he went on to describe women strug- gling for equality as “femi- nazis” and “bra-burners” is extremely disheartening and down-right spreading ha- tred. What does he_ have against women and for that matter anyone trying to right some injustices in our society? I do not hate Doug Collins, since that word is something he loves to use subliminally, but rather J feel important. Unfortunately, Mr. Collins has that depart- ment taken care of. Keith Baric North Vancouver 1 also feel sorry for all the excellent journalists that would love to have a whole column every week to write about something _ really sorry for him — sorry that in his lonely world he will never see all races and gen- ders working as one towards a common goal.
