imstruction THE DRIVE by Surrey par- ents to establish a traditional school has Jed North Vancouver School Distri :t 44 to approve a new policy for establishing alternative pro- grams or schools in North Vancouver. NORTH VANCOUVER SCHOOL BOARD By Kevin Gillies Superintendent of schools Dr. Robin Brayne told the board Tuesday that “tips” indicate a push for a traditional school may happen in North Vancouver. Brayne said the new policy retains the intent and substance of an existing policy except that it reflects legislative changes since 1986. The new policy states: The Board of School Trustees may establish alternative programs or schools to meet the intellectual and social development needs of students who require a learning sit- uation not provided in existing schools and district programs. The board will consider a pro- posal for the establishment of an alternative school or program when the following requirements have been met: @ the schooi or program meets the fequirements and regulations of the School Act. and provincial and dis- trict prescribed curriculum; @ the program or school will have a statement of philosophy and objectives; @ the program or school will be 91B 4 dr, ; spd. ., sunroof, - focal car white or bisck $17,825 2 te droase open to application by any student in the district. nature of the progr of limitations of space. the criteria and process for selection will be approved by the board as part of the program or school proposal: the program or school can main- tain enrollment without students receiving special transportation assistance from the district: the program or school can be accommodated in suitable facilities: @ the program or school can be sustained with a level of funding equal to that of any other program or school in the district: @ the program or school will be planned within the constraints of the regular planning timelines of the district. The old policy required any pro- posal for an alternative program or school to go before an advisory committee chaired by the superin- tendert of schools and comprised of one school trustee and four rep- resentatives of the North Vancouver Teachers’ Association, including one elementary and one secondary administrator (adminis- trators are no longer members of the NVTA). The committee would then rec- ommend the establishment or con- tinuation of a program bised on the uniqueness of the propused alterna- live in terms of teaching and learn- ing styles. , There are two altemative schools in North Vancouver — Windsor House (Kindergarten to Grade 8) and Keith Lynn Alternative sec- ondary school (Grades § tol0) — but both were established prior to September 1986. 90 MAZDA PICK-UP Black with Rreglass eager. mags very clean roan $9,305 REGENCY NISSAN REGENCY AUTO GROUP 700 BLOCK MARINE DRIVE 985-9311 Where selection of students is required because of EAT UR ee cee LEARN TO to assert yourself, = make things happen.
