Incidentally, the Mercury
Villager is essentially the same
vehicle as the Nissan Quest. It was
designed and engineered by Nissan
but is built in the United States by
Ford.

Some concerns I had about both
vans were: the absence of rear head
sestraints, no reclining rear seats,
and no rear glass-liftgate. (Some
other mini-vans offer them).

. In addition, the Grand Caravan
das no outside handle on the rear
hatch. It has to be unlocked with a
key each time you want to open it.
The iatch mechanism is prominent-
ly located in the center of the
hatch, about the same height as
your head. - :

The Windstar has two side-
mounted latches.

Both the Windstar and Caravan
have rear side windows that pop
out for ventilation, but only the
Grand Caravan has a center side
window that pops out.

The Windstar offers some other
advantages such as a shorter turn-
ing radius, a larger otional fuel
tank, a standard rear cargo net, and
Ford’s Roadside Assistance
Program.

Standard equipment on both
models includes seven passenger
seating, dual airbags, side-door
beams, “walk-through” access to
the rear seating area, four-speed
automatic transmissions with over-
drive lockout-switch, power steer-
ing, interval wipers, AM/FM radio,
and numerous cupholders.

Anti-lock brakes are standard
on the Windstar but not on the
Grand Caravan/Voyager.

Retail Price of a Windstar GL is
$22,395; LX, $25,995. Options are
on top of that.

None of Chrysler’s mini-vans is
available with a standard 3.8-liter
V6 and their pricing structure is
more complicated, but a fully
equipped Grand Voyager LE is
priced at $27,985.

Since MSRP’s are negotiable, I
expect Ford and Chrysler dealers to
be competitive in pricing. Shop
both dealers to be sure you're get-
ting the best price, feature for fea-
ture.

The comparison between the
Windstar and Caravan may be aca-
demic next year as Chrysler will be
unveiling an all-new 1996 mini-
van to replace the current model.

it will be interesting to see if the
new van has the same dramatic
effect as the current one. It's cer-
tainly a hard act to follow.
