business, your actions in the
first few minutes can mean
the difference between life

and death.

If you are a person with a
physical or mental disability, your
escape may take a little longer.

We want to help you maximize
your chances of surviving a fire by
planning ahead, before a fire
starts,

Live near an exit, the closer the
better. If you live in an apart-
ment, try to occupy one on the
ground floor.

If you ars in a_ two-storey
house, arrange to sleep on the first

. floor, and be sure to have a tcle-
phone by your bed.

Being closer to the ground and
an exit will facilitate your escape

If necessary, have a ramp con-
structed for emergency exits. .

fire.

If you are deaf or hard of
hearing, you can purchase smoke
alarms with strobe flights, or an
attachment that will vibrate your
pillow in case’ of fire.

These may be purchased from
the Western Institute for the Deaf
and Hard of Hearing.

Test your smoke alarms
monthly and change the batteries
at least once a year.

Make sure the address numbers
in your residence are clearly
numbered and visible from the
street.

Also, advise your local fire
department if you have a disability
requiring special care or rescue
considerations.

Incase of fire, always get out
- first, if you can, then call the fire
department.

from your home or apartment,

This is very important and is
especially critical if your disability
is going to slow you down.

Know two ways out of every
room. If one way is out a win:

you exit.

other exit; if not, slowly open the
door, but ‘be prepared to close it it,

Wf you find yourself trapped,

pillows, blankets, etc. to’ keep
smoke out.

Hf there is a phone in the room,
call the fire department and let
them know you are trapped. Give
then your exact location,

Keeping low, put a wet cloth
over your nose and wait at the
window, signalling with a sheet or
flashlight. Do not break the win-
dow,

The best advice is to stop a fire

before it starts.

Be aware of your environment
and identify possible hazards in
your home. .
