Getting right into it, she and her cycling friend went on a pro- per tour the other day. Ended up out at 30th and Marine, or thereabouts, seeing the world, when Fate waggled her finger once again, and Nell's machine gave up the ghost. They flagged a municipal gardener who in turn alerted the police. Two policemen responded and were astonished to learn that home base was back at the banks of the Capilano River, So then the policemen enlisted the help of the Fire Department, and thus the ladies arrived back home with maximum fanfare, police car wich ladies, fire rescue vehicle carrying scooter and bike, a gala homecoming. It only lacked a band. She could go even further afield, given a reliable battery connection and some better pro- tection from traffic. She'd love to see more bicycle paths. Her con- fidence has greatly improved. When she first had the thing she would forget abcut the speed ad- justmeni doo-dad on the handle- bar. She backed up in high one morning, right into the little deco- rative pool she has contrived in her beautiful small garden. We rejoice with Nell, scooting into life, paddling her own canoe. Wish | had room to tell you about the night she spent hugging her fish. Take .her garage. Matter of fact, someone did. She had it in the morning when she left home, but Fate’s fickle finger beckoned the demolition experts to the wrong side of the lane and guess what. It didn’t faze her. She remains inextricably involved with her fellow voyagers in this world, full of curiosity, full of imagination and with a sense of humor that carries her over and past the unal- terable fact that she’s not what she used to be — hardly hale, and not really hearty. Both hip and knee are deteriorating in such a fashion that doctors regard corrective measures more perilous than the condition itself. A cane helps with the knee, to some extent, but the hip is at times quite non-suppor- tive. There is intense pain, and walking is unthinkable. .As is driv- ing her car, so constricting her horizons and dampening her spirited enthusiasm for life. It was a revelation to her, then, to see one of these mechanized scooters being used out on the sidewalks in Park Royal, and she thought, ““Wow, that’s for me.” The Mediquip people had a used one that she could bu; for significantly less than the brand- new model and she went for it. IH lead, OK?” It took two of these guided ex- cursions before Nell was ready to tackle the access on to the little bridge alone, and a possible tussle with cars coming from every di- rection. She was pretty cautious, creeping along behind her bolder friend. It worked, though, the moral and physical support was soon not needed, she was ready for the world, and got a thrill of freedom just by taking herself all the way to McDonald’s to have lunch. Nell lives in a new world, now.
