Duathletes succeed FOUR NORTH Shore athletes noiched strong results at the World Duathlon Championships in Desert Princess, Palm Springs, where athletes from more than 21 countries came to compete on the Nov. 24-25 weekend. David Rudd, of West Van- couver, won the race for his 55-59 age category as well as set a new course record. Rudd chipped a sizeable seven minutes off the past record. “Only 20 people 40 and over were faster than me and I’m 59, so [ had a good race,’* said Rudd, who finished 171 overall out of a field of 700. The championship length course was a 10-kilometre run, 62- kilometre bike, 10-kilometre run. The course, double the usual Jeagth, also involved running on sand. In the professional category, North Vancouver firefighter Paul Granger finished 0th while Dan Fisher finished 19th. Both Granger and Fisher are amateurs who were racing against pros, many of whom compete and train full-time. Meanwhile, Sanya Fisher finished second in the 25-30 age group as well as second overall in the short distance course which consists of a three-kilometre run, 19-kilometre bike, and a kilometre run, This was the first World Duathlon Championship sanction- ed by the International Triathlon Union.
