18 - Friday, September 14, 1990 - North Shore News North Shore students named top SFU scholars WEST VANCOUVER native Denise Clark and former Hand- sworth Secondary School student Peter McCorquodale have been named two of the top scholars at Simon Fraser University (SFU). Clark, 30, a geneticist, has won two of SFU's highest graduate awards: the Governor Gencral’s Gold Medal for top academic achievement in graduate studies and the Dean of Graduate Studies’ Convocation Medal in Science. Clark managed to reach a grade point average of 4.0 while study- ing for her PhD in molecular genetics. Clark has also published three times in international research journals and is in the process of writing two more papers. in 1986, Clark received the prestigious Arthur Minton schol- arship from the Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada. Only one of these awards is given out each year. Clark is now pursuing postgraduate research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Cen- tre in Seattle. Meanwhile, McCorquodale, who entered SFU in 1985 on a Gordon M. Shrum scholarship, after placing second overall in the B.C. provincial high school ex- ams, has graduated with SFU’s highest undergraduate award: the Governor-Generai’s Silver Medal. McCerquodale is now studying for his PhD at Stanford Universi- ty in the United States.
