WV student designer advances to finals WEST VANCOUVER fashion designer Mark Hiscox has advanced to the finals of the prestigious Dubonnet Design Fashion Contest in the student designer catepory. By ELIZABETH CO News Reporter Hiscox, 21, will present his design at the national juried contest May 8 in Montreal where he will be competing against five designers from across the country. He was chosen from 12 semi-finalists in the competition’s western region which includes the four western provinces and Ontario. The other two western finalists are from Ontario’s Ryerson and Seneca Colleges. A total of 586 designers submitted drawings of their 1990-91 fall and winter designs. “It’s pretty tough competition. I wasn’t really expecting to win because of my drawings,’’ Hiscox said, explaining that he thought the quality of the drawings he submitted was only average. “It seems the judging was a fair mix between the drawing skills and the design itself.”” Hiscox submitted three drawings. The first design, in muted green, is a softly draped skirt and a wrapped blouse reminiscent of classical Grecian style, The second design, which Hiscox plans to make in linen for the finals, is a dark cobalt blue skirt and short jacket, also in draping folds, and a white blouse. His last drawing was a full length, wrapped felt coat in olive green. Unlike the other western finalists, Hiscox was only a part-time student during wis training at Vancouver Community College’s fashion arts pro- gram from which he graduated in December. ‘The people he’s competing with are from full-time, four-year colleges and he was just part-time, three nights a week for three 12-week terms, so it’s quite an achievement,’’ said Sally Hudson, fashion arts coordinator at VCC. Hiscox is now studying at Emily Carr College of Art and Design. t in our continuing effort to improve our CUSTOMER SATISFACTION, we would like you to join us in a FREE workshop on General Auto Maintenance.
